S.C. State hopes big change will lead to major success


ORANGEBURG — In keeping with the dominant theme of the current political season, 2008 figures to be a season of change for the South Carolina State football program. Change is everywhere, from the playing field to the coaching staff, as Buddy Pough continues to shuffle the cards hoping to come up a big winner in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Pair of defensemen sign

South Carolina Stingrays coach Jared Bednar added two more defensemen to the lineup — signing Zach Tarkir and Johann Kroll for the upcoming ECHL season. Tarkir, 24, split time his rookie season between the ECHL's Trenton Devils and the American Hockey League's Lowell Devils a year ago.

Experts agree: Bulldogs a Top 25 team

Four out of five preseason polls agree — The Citadel has a Top 25 football team this year. The announcement this week of The Sports Network's poll of FCS teams, with the Bulldogs pegged at No. 23, makes The Citadel a consensus Top 25 pick entering the 2008 season.

Bulldogs, Del. St. cream of MEAC

For the second year in a row, South Carolina State has been voted the preseason favorite to win the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship, much to Buddy Pough's surprise. The Bulldogs received 272 points in the poll of MEAC coaches and sports information directors, 20 more than defending champion Delaware State. S.C. State and the Hornets both received six first-place votes.

Childers finally suiting up

COLUMBIA — Tori Childers learned Wednesday that he's no longer a signee and now a South Carolina enrollee. Childers had a qualifying test red-flagged by the NCAA. But he took it again and learned this week that he passed it.

Cougs' Yearwood on men's soccer watch list

College of Charleston men's soccer player Kareem Yearwood was named to the 2008 Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy Watch List. Considered the highest individual honor in college soccer, the recipients of the Hermann are selected by Division I head coaches who are members of the NSCAA.

Stags still have target on their backs

Gators ready to sink teeth into region title

Goose Creek plays Stratford tonight in what just might be the main event of the 38th annual Muhler Sertoma Classic. But it wasn't too long ago that the Gators weren't worth mentioning on the undercard of the event. Chuck Reedy was named the school's new coach in 2002 and inherited a program that had won just 11 games in six years.
