Pinewood Prep may be team to beat in Roundball

The Piggly Wiggly Roundball Classic attracts teams from the best basketball hotbeds in the country, and this year is no exception as teams from Charlotte, Louisville, Atlanta, Baltimore and Washington are in this year's field.

FREEPORT, BAHAMAS — Pinewood Prep defeated Columbia High School from Atlanta 66-64 to win the championship of the Tabernacle Christian Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday night. Kenny Manigault scored at the buzzer to seal the win for Pinewood.

Rock Hill rivals paired in II-AAAA title clash

The field is set for the Weekend of Champions, which will be held at Death Valley this year. Action gets under way at 8 p.m. Friday with the battle of Rock Hill. Northwestern plays South Pointe in the Division II-AAAA championship game in what should be a memorable matchup. Northwestern is making its first appearance in the state title game since 2001, while South Pointe is making its first trip in the school's four-year history.

Pinewood's Gilliard helps SCISA all-stars to victory

CHARLOTTE — Pinewood Prep's LaQuan Gilliard made two big plays in the fourth quarter to help the SCISA football all-stars defeat the North Carolina all-stars, 27-16, on Friday in the Oasis All Star Shrine Classic, which was contested at Memorial Stadium.

ST. STEPHEN — Stunned and done. Timberland's dream season came to an end Friday night as Dillon scored a touchdown late in regulation to force overtime. Both teams missed field goals in the first overtime of the Class AA Lower State football championship, and in the second overtime, Dillon quarterback Travis Murphy scrambled 10 yards for a touchdown and T.J. Grimsley kicked the extra point.

Unbeaten Wolves wary of Dillon

The Timberland Wolves picked up a big win last weekend with a 24-21 victory over two-time defending state champion Cheraw. Timberland football coach Art Craig had little problem putting the game in perspective as his team prepared for another big challenge when the Wolves play Dillon today in the Class AA Lower State championship. "The seniors have one goal," Craig said. "They know no one will care that they beat Cheraw if they lose to Dillon."
