First inhabited by the Sewanee Indians, the Isle of Palms is known to many as a relaxing summer getaway. The island is seven miles long and a mile wide. There is a marina where visitors can enjoy shrimping, crabbing and bodysurfing. Surfing is allowed, but boards can't be used within 100 feet of swimmers. On Front Beach, there are public restrooms and outside showers. There are no concessions directly on the beach, but there are plenty of businesses and restaurants nearby. Hotels are close to the beach. There are two municipal parking lots near the beach that charge $5 a day. Bike ramps and boardwalks near Palm Boulevard may provide easier access to the beach. Located 15 miles from downtown Charleston, access onto the Isle of Palms is available from the Isle of Palms connector or Sullivan's Island. The nearby Isle of Palms County Park offers dressing areas, restrooms, a playground, a sand volleyball court and showers.
