Known as 'The Edge of America,' the island is nestled between the Folly River and the Atlantic Ocean, about 15 minutes from downtown Charleston. Folly has one of the most laid-back feels of our local beaches. It's one of the top spots for surfing, and hosts several surfing contests every year, including the Wahine Contest usually held in May, but which will be held Sept. 8-9 this year. While the 'Washout' probably has the best waves on Folly, there are several other popular surfing spots. There are seafood restaurants and pubs. There is a year-round leash law for dogs, which aren't permitted on the beach from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Access to the beach is free. Parking is available along the streets, though the town recently put parking meters at beach accesses and the Washout. The largest pier on the beach, measuring 1,000 feet long, has a gift shop, a tackle shop and a seafood restaurant. The nearby Folly Beach County Park has public restrooms, showers, concessions and parking. Lifeguards are on duty. Admission to the park, which is open from 9 a.m.-7 p.m., is $5 per vehicle.
