United we stood after 9/11.
But not for long.
Now divided we fall ever further into blame-game, buck-passing acrimony over not just 9/11's causes and effects but other problems, real and perceived. Lots of folks on both the left and right are increasingly certain that those problems are virtually all the fault of folks on the other side.

There is growing national concern in the medical community that the adverse health impacts of air pollution have been under-appreciated. With our rapid population growth, increasing traffic and proposed port expansions, diesel emissions and other small particulate pollution are of special concern for our area.

Every major port in the United States is moving as fast as possible toward loading long-haul cargo on to railroad lines. Since 2000 railway owners have spent more than $10 billion improving tracks and adding freight-yards. Now they are doubling down on that investment. The key driver: movi...

Robert Behre's recent article on the removal of vegetative buffers at Fenwick Hall Plantation on Johns Island is truly a "cautionary tale" for everyone concerned about the future of Johns Island. The circa 1740 Georgian style Fenwick Hall plantation is listed on the National Registe...

By R.L. SCHREADLEY This is Carolina Day, the 232nd anniversary of the Battle of Fort Sullivan. If you are not a native of South Carolinian (and possibly even if you are), you likely have never heard of Fort Sullivan and the significance of this day. Most American school children have...

Last Monday, columnist Ron Brinson challenged the Coastal Conservation League to explain its position on the port. We welcome that opportunity. We support the ongoing operation of the port, and its expansion, with one simple qualification: the Port of Charleston should ensure that its operations do not endanger our health and quality of life.

I strongly dispute the claims made in a recent Myrtle Beach Sun News article repeated by The Associated Press — claims that have been refuted before and are being rehashed again. The projects referenced in this piece all relate to community projects or local agencies from which I have received a request for funding. None of them financially benefits family or friends.

On the next-to-last day of this year's state legislative session in Columbia, a good deal of time was consumed in discussing a bill that seemed pretty esoteric to the uninitiated. The legislation partially dealt with construction permits and how many days were needed for a party to receive notice for a hearing on the possibility of work commencing once a permit is issued.

As lawmakers return to the Columbia next week to take up vetoes and finish the last bit of work for the 117th General Assembly, I cannot help but be frustrated by the need for this extra session. We were able to finish work on many bills to improve our state. However, some of those accomplishments only became law after a legislative override of a veto.

A recent article reported that Bill Saunders of Concerned Citizens of the Sea Islands indicated that he did not see how a a parkway across Johns Island would benefit Johns or Wadmalaw islands. As a resident of Wadmalaw Island, I have given it some thought, too.

Father's Day is a day of celebration for the wonderful gifts that an involved, loving father can bring to his child's life. This Father's Day, we all need to contemplate these questions: How important is an involved father and what more are we willing to invest to support fathers who want and need help?

"I don't have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. It's a depression. Everybody's out of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel's worth; banks are going bust; shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter; punks are running wild in the street, and there's nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do, and there's no end to it.
