Nadal knocks off Federer in Wimbledon classic labeled the greatest match ever

Monday, July 7, 2008
WIMBLEDON, England — Rafael Nadal, grass stains on his white shirt and a Spanish flag tucked under his arm, scampered through the Centre Court stands to celebrate his first Wimbledon title with hugs and handshakes. Roger Federer sat in his changeover chair, protected from the night's chill by his custom-made cream cardigan with the gold "RF" on the chest. Alone with his thoughts, alone with the knowledge that he had come so close to becoming the first man since the 1880s to win a sixth consecutive championship at the All England Club.

Tuesday, July 1, 2008

Venus joins her sister in fourth round

Sunday, June 29, 2008
WIMBLEDON, England — One swing from completing her week's work, Venus Williams toed the baseline, dribbled the ball, gave it a toss and delivered yet another thunderclap serve at sun-kissed Wimbledon. The ace bounced off the Court 1 backstop as Williams trotted to the net to bid another foe farewell. The scoreboard said 127 mph, the fastest women's serve ever recorded at Wimbledon. The scoreboard also had Williams winning 6-1, 7-5 Saturday over qualifier Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez.

No. 1 Bites The Dust

Saturday, June 28, 2008
WIMBLEDON, England — They're still counting casualties back home, and so when Zheng Jie completed the biggest victory of her career Friday at Wimbledon, she resisted any temptation to leap or squeal or pump her fist or collapse to the grass in glee. Instead she merely cracked a slight smile, hoping her family, friends and fans in China could do the same.

Friday, June 27, 2008

Safin upsets Djokovic; Federer rolls

Thursday, June 26, 2008
WIMBLEDON, England — A match involving Marat Safin is always worth watching. He's liable to moon the crowd, smash several rackets or dominate the world's best tennis player, as he did against Pete Sampras in the 2000 U.S. Open final. For a change, Wimbledon inspired Safin's best behavior and tennis Wednesday, much to the chagrin of Novak Djokovic.

Davenport limps her way into second round

Wednesday, June 25, 2008
WIMBLEDON, England — With Wimbledon devolving into a fashion contest, former champion Lindsay Davenport's retro getup may have trumped all other outfits. Her sleeveless white top and pleated skirt were very 1980s, and the wrap on her right leg — with bandages extending from mid-thigh to mid-calf — looked like something out of the British Museum.
