Folly Beach is a favorite scene for those who enjoy the beach atmosphere as much as the actual sun, sand and saltwater. BEHIND BARS

Thursday, May 1, 12 00 a.m.

It was a spring Thursday afternoon much like any other. The weather was beautiful, the birds were singing and I was about to venture into the great Spanish unknown. Earlier that day, I was contacted by a representative from Social Wine Bar at 188 East Bay St. to stop by and sample what is called Txacoli. It's pronounced "chacoli."

Where's the 'Beef'? It's in Mount Pleasant

Thursday, April 24, 12 00 a.m.

Florida-based chain Beef O'Brady's recently opened a franchise in the Belle Hall Shopping Center and three months into their venture, the bar/restaurant has already attracted a loyal clientele. According to manager Treci Bennett, Beef O' Brady's attracts customers who appreciate "more of a casual atmosphere." After my visit there is no doubt that the place is indeed laid back.

Finding 'Tequila' West of the Ashley

Thursday, April 10, 12 00 a.m.

While there are a plethora of similar Mexican restaurants in the Lowcountry (La Hacienda, La Carreta, Rio Grande, El Dorado, etc.), despite their similar menus, and the fact they all pretty much offer the same inexpensive food — these places tend to develop identities of their own according to geography.

Thursday, March 27, 12 00 a.m.

A good friend who grew up in West Ashley always told me that some of the best wings he'd had were offered by a neighborhood bar in West Ashley, where on Fridays the taste – and more importantly the price – couldn't be beat.

Snapper Jack's is a good fit for Folly Beach

Thursday, Feb. 28, 12 00 a.m.

When it comes to Folly Beach night life these days, or simply Folly Beach in general, my mind invariably wanders to an old Post and Courier article on the passing of local musician Rick Huff. Huff, a man I never met, had an affinity for his adopted hometown of Folly Beach and had once described it as 'Mayberry by the sea.'
