The optimism and enthusiasm that President Bush displays as he marks the 60th anniversary of the foundation of Israel and simultaneously advances his peace initiative in the Middle East are a welcome relief from the gloom and doom of the pundits. It's also a good policy.

John McCain, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have attracted considerable attention as the final three 2008 presidential candidates, though political realities now appear to have trimmed it to a two-man race. But another trio of candidates for another office pack some star power of their own — and deliver an entertaining reminder that California's merging of politics and show biz didn't start with former Gov. Ronald Reagan or end with current Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The U.N. Office for Humanitarian Affairs is warning that there is a risk of a second catastrophe in the wake of the deadly cyclone that has already taken the lives of hundreds of thousands on people in Burma. The looming second catastrophe will not be a natural disaster because it will have been caused by the criminal callousness of the generals who rule the country they call Myanmar.

The preliminary results of a survey detailing the use of the Ravenel Bridge by pedestrians and cyclists should be a major encouragement to local and state officials to provide ease of access on other spans in the metropolitan area. It's no surprise that the Ravenel Bridge has been an attractive incentive for residents to exercise recreationally, but the survey by College of Charleston researchers also found that more than 10 percent of those polled use the bridge's walkway/bike lane to commute.
