Summer reading Readers had some interesting takes on Tuesday's column about beach books. "Tell whoever is reading 'When You Are Engulfed in Flames' to SKIP pages 236-240," Christine Bosworth wrote. Beach books Pluffmudders have plenty of excuses to read. They join book clubs ... both virtual and living room. They swap books, borrow books, buy books and join chat rooms to see what friends are reading.

Friday mashup GMLc's killer app is the use of curiosity and news judgment to roam around in other news pages and sites, picking up and distilling unusual items of interest. That sounds lofty. All it means is hitch up your britches, here's another weekly news roundup of stuff we liked from around our tiny state and the big world.

June brides Pity the poor girl getting married this month in the Lowcountry. It doesn't matter that she is wearing white, sun-reflecting clothing. This June is July-hot. As temperatures boil over at 95 and 96 degrees, GMLc can think of one variety of June bride who won't mind the heat ... the destination bride who has arrived from New York, Georgia, North Carolina, Chicago or Boston, with her entire entourage, to have her wedding here in Charleston.

Bubble gum art Last week while GMLc was shaking with fever and coughing, hacking and retching with bronchitis, we noticed that Charleston's three gum-covered, pop-art utility poles near the landmark City Market probably won't have a chance to become landmarks of their own.

The favorite view of the Lowcountry for this pluffmudder is the view from the water. It doesn't matter if it's a long shot from seaward, or the marsh-tops green, pillowtop cloud white and rare blue of the creek from your vantage point in a small boat, or just the sweeping panorama of a lonely beach and maritime forest from your eyes swimming just above the waves out in the surf.

Now, now. Here's a kerchief. Do pat on that glistening along your cheek. Have a seat here in the piazza shade, up on this rejuvenating little bouncy joggling board. A cool, mint drink, perhaps? Rather humid this morning, isn't it? You seem a might peaked.
