Tournaments play a key role in most sports but may be critical in keeping the Lowcountry's most home-grown sport alive. Half-rubber, a sport similar to baseball but played without the bases and with only half a ball, is nearly a century old and barely exists beyond the coastal regions of Charleston and Savannah.

Dedicated runners have come to expect running-related injuries. In any given year, up to 70 percent of runners sustain an injury that stops them from running. Yet those problems often are caused by errors in training and technique and can be avoided, according to Sam Murphy, a training consultant to the London Marathon, Nike and Adidas and co-author of the upcoming book "Running Well."

On Wednesday evening, thousands of cyclists in hundreds of locations worldwide, including two in the Lowcountry, will participate in The Ride of Silence, a free bike ride that asks cyclists to travel no faster than 12 mph and remain silent while riding.

Let's face it. Most Lowcountry residents — perhaps most Americans outside of Southern California — probably can't name more than two or three of the top professional volleyball players in the world, much less the United States. But unlike other sporting events, which require you to be a bit of a fan, the AVP Crocs professional volleyball tour is as much sport as it is a spectacle of amusement, people-watching and laid-back lounging.
