Rules will make lawns greener

WASHINGTON — Gasoline-powered lawn mowers that are a big cause of summertime air pollution will have to be dramatically cleaner under rules issued Thursday by the Environmental Protection Agency. The long-awaited regulations require a 35 percent reduction in emissions from new lawn and garden equipment beginning in 2011.

Roper plans 50-bed hospital

Just weeks ago, Berkeley County didn't have a full-service hospital, or even plans for one on the books. Now it could have two hospitals competing for patients within a matter of years. Roper St. Francis Healthcare unveiled plans Thursday to build a 50-bed hospital on land the company purchased this year in the yet-to- be-built Carnes Crossroads sub- division in Goose Creek.

Roper seeks to build 50-bed hospital in Berkeley County

Roper St. Francis Healthcare today announced plans to seek state approval to build a 50-bed full-service hospital in the fast-growing Carnes Crossroads area in lower Berkeley County.

Construction on the two-and-a-half-year project is expected to begin in 2010.

Roper said it plans to apply for its primary approval — known as a “certificate of need” —in October.

Port operations to be reduced starting Thursday

The State Ports Authority's Union Pier Terminal and all port access gates operated by SPA workers will be open until noon tomorrow for the pickup of imported cargo only. Banking veteran to retire

One of South Carolina's most influential bankers is retiring at the end of 2008, punctuating what has been a tumultuous year for the company he built over the past two decades. Mack I. Whittle Jr., chairman, president and chief executive officer of The South Financial Group Inc., said he plans to remain a director of the Upstate-based bank owner until 2011, when his term expires.
