Battery's Alonso voted top rookie

Charleston Battery midfielder Osvaldo Alonso was named the USL First Division Rookie of the Year as voted by the league coaches and general manager, becoming the soccer franchise's first player to win the award. A native of Cuba, Alonso scored seven goals and added two assists in 31 games played, helping the Battery reach the U.S. Open Cup final and qualify for the league playoffs. He scored Charleston's lone goal in a 2-1 first-round aggregate-score loss to Rochester. Alonso defected from the Cuban national team in July 2007, during the CONCACAF Gold Cup. The Puerto Rico Islanders swept the other three top league honors: Jonathan Steele was named most valuable player; Cristian Arrieta, defender of the year; and Colin Clarke, coach of the year. College soccer Justin Wyatt scored 39 seconds into the match and Elon (5-7-1, 4-0-0 Southern Conference) made it stand up for a 1-0 men's victory over the College of Charleston (7-5, 1-2) in Elon, N.C. The Cougars were outshot 4-3 in the first half but had six shots in the second half. C of C keeper Clark Hankins made three saves. --Michelle Dennis scored in the second minute of the second extra period to lift Charleston Southern (7-4-2, 2-1-1 Big South Conference) to a 2-1 overtime women's win over High Point (7-3-4, 3-1-0) in High Point, N.C. Laura Eldridge scored for the Panthers in the 19th minute, and CSU's Caitlin Wesnesky tied it in the final minute of regulation. Keeper Alysa Budros had five saves College volleyball The Citadel (6-12, 0-6 Southern) dropped a 3-0 road decision to UNC Greensboro (12-7, 4-2). UNCG won, 25-15, 26-24, 25-14. Tatum Jestila had a team-high eight kills for the Bulldogs. Emily Hill had 15 assists. College cross country The College of Charleston women placed third out of 18 teams, and the Cougar men were seventh out of 17 teams in Furman Invitational in Greenville. Kristen Wolfe led the C of C women, placing 13th with a time of 19 minutes, 46 seconds, for 5K. Trevor Sprague topped the men, running 28:27 for 8K to finish 35th.
