Friday, October 10, 2008

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA — The South Carolina Stingrays opened their ECHL preseason with a 3-2 overtime loss to the Alaska Aces before 4,805 at Sullivan Arena late Wednesday night.

On a delayed Stingrays penalty, Lee Green, who scored just two goals last season, recorded the game-winning goal at 1:15 of sudden death, beating Stingrays goaltender Josh Johnson.

Johnson, who won 23 games last season for South Carolina, turned aside 30 of 33 shots.

For the Stingrays, Jeff Rainville scored a power-play goal 11 minutes into the first period off a Travis Morin assist. Paul Kelly made it 2-1 for the Stingrays just under six minutes into the third period, when he deflected Sasha Pokuluk's drive.

The teams also played late Thursday night.
