Riders on the storm

Tropical Storm Hanna didn’t deliver much of a blow to Charleston, but she did drum up some stellar surfing conditions.

The swell at The Washout on Folly Beach on Sept. 5 was consistently overhead for most of the day, a rare occurrence that local wave riders couldn’t pass up.

As a drizzly dawn broke, surfers, kayakers, boogie boarders and paddle surfers began flocking to Charleston’s No. 1 surfing spot to get in on the action. By midday, The Wash- out was lined with cars.

A few riptides were spotted, a couple of surfers tired before making it past the wall and into the good waves, and at least one board was broken in the crush of a swell. But over- all, surfers slashed through 10- to 13-foot waves without a hitch.

Police Chief H.T. “Terry” Boatwright, who does not surf, told The Post and Courier that he saw no reason to shoo any of the surf crowd away, saying conditions just weren’t that hazardous.

“They’re having a great time,” he said. “God bless ‘em.”
