Associated Press
Tuesday, October 7, 2008

LAKE CITY, S.C. (AP) — The father of South Carolina financier Darla Moore has died.

Clemson University announced Tuesday that 80-year-old Eugene T. Moore Jr. died Sunday in Florence. A cause of death was not given.

Moore graduated from Clemson in 1950. The Lake City native was captain of the 1949 football team and was named to the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993.

Eugene Moore became a teacher and educator. In his honor, Darla Moore donated $10 million to Clemson in 2002. The university said the Eugene T. Moore School of Education produces more undergraduate-trained teachers than any other in the state.

Darla Moore is a partner in the New York investment firm Rainwater Inc.

She endowed the University of South Carolina’s business school, which carries her name.
