GENERAL MARITIME EVENTS

HISTORIC BLUFFTON ARTS AND SEAFOOD FESTIVAL: Oct. 20-26 in the Bluffton historic district. The 4th annual festival is a week-long event showcasing the locally harvested seafood, Lowcountry cuisine, great art and the Southern hospitality of Bluffton. The festival includes two 5K runs/health walks, a VIP “Pop an Oyster with Champagne” night, a children’s fishing tournament, the Art and Seafood Street Fest, live music, an Iron Chef challenge, boat tours, Rockin’ on the Dock grand finale and a boat parade. SEWEE LECTURE SERIES — LOGGERHEAD SEA TURTLES: Oct. 25, 2 p.m. Hear DuBose Griffin, coordinator of DNR’s South Carolina Marine Turtle Conservation Program, speak on the 2008 sea turtle nesting season, as well as the S.C. Conservation Program for Sea Turtles, Loggerhead activities, nesting sites, hatchlings and volunteer efforts. Sewee Center, 5821 S.C. Highway 17 North, Awendaw. Free. SUSTAINABLE SEAFOOD FESTIVAL: Oct. 26, noon-6 p.m. at the Charleston Maritime Center. More than a dozen of Charleston’s finest chefs will compete in a sustainable seafood cook-off competition, as well as perform free cooking demonstrations. The high school recipe contest will also return this year, as student finalists from throughout the state face off to prepare their original dishes for a judging panel of culinary experts. The top three juniors and seniors will be offered scholarships of up to $12,000 to Johnson & Wales University. Admission is free; seafood, beverages and other items are available for purchase. COASTAL BUTTERFLIES AND TAGGING: Oct. 29, 1-4 p.m. DNR biologist Billy McCord will speak on the ecology of butterflies found along the South Carolina coast. Participants will then travel to Folly Beach County Park for a demonstration on Monarch tagging. The outing will afford opportunities to observe other butterflies, their nectar and host plants as well as other wildlife and plants. DNR Marine Resources Center, Fort Johnson Road, James Island. FISHING

HADDRELL’S POINT GATOR TROUT TOURNAMENT: Begins Oct. 6. The tournament will run six weeks, with weekly winners and an overall winner, and will end with a shootout with the overall first- and second-place winners in a one-day fish-off. Tournaments run Monday through Sunday; entries for each week must be made by close of business Sunday. The entry fee is $20 per week per angler; $10 of each entry goes to the weekly winner. CHARLESTON ANGLER TROUT SEMINAR: Oct. 7, 6:30 p.m., West Ashley. Fall and winter trout techniques with Capt. Ralph Phillips. Call 843-571-3899 to register.

EARL ARMANTROUT OPEN TROUT TOURNAMENT: Oct. 10-11. Entry fees are $30 per adult and $20 per youth angler, and include a T-shirt and dinner. Captains’ meeting will be 6-8 p.m. Oct. 10 at American Legion Post No. 136, 832 Coleman Blvd., Mount Pleasant. Fish- ing will be on Oct. 11; weigh-in station open from 4-6 p.m. at A.L. Post No. 136. FAMILY FISHING DAY AT SEWEE POND: Oct. 11, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Celebrate National Wildlife Refuge Week at the Sewee Center, 5821 S.C. Highway 17 North, Awendaw. Bring your own tackle and fish free for bream, bass and catfish in this stocked pond. It’s catch- and-keep, so bring your bait, cooler and lunch to fish all day. RED OCTOBER SURF TOURNAMENT: Oct. 11. The W.P. Baldwin Associates fifth annual Red October Surf Fishing Tournament will be held Oct. 11. Registration and mandatory captain’s meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 9 at Shem Creek Bar and Grill. The entry fee is $35 per angler and is limited to the first 35 anglers. “Tag-turn-in” and awards will follow at W.P. Baldwin Associates, located underneath McClellanville Town Hall offices at 405 Pinckney St. in Mc- Clellanville. Contact Anthony Noury at 843- 442-2076.

LOWCOUNTRY DISCOVERY — FISH AND ART: Oct. 18, 10 a.m. Children ages 6-10 are welcome to come in to Sewee Center’s classroom, 5821 S.C. Highway 17 North, Awendaw, for an environmental education class on fish. Participants will learn about the parts of a fish, their adaptations and will create their own fish art T-shirt using a real fish. $3/child. Call 843-928-3368 to register.

BP AMOCO LOWCOUNTRY RED*TROUT CELEBRITY CLASSIC: Oct. 24-26. This annual event pairs celebrities with local charter captains in a high-profile redfish and trout tournament. As part of the Redbone tournament series, proceeds help fund cystic fibrosis research. A fee of $2,400 includes a boat entry (with two anglers), all tackle and supplies, a professional guide, two dinners and a cocktail party. ISLANDERS SHAG CLUB/GREATER CHARLESTON SKI CLUB ANNUAL INSHORE FISHING TOURNAMENT: Oct. 25. Captains’ meeting 6:30-8 p.m. Oct. 21 at Crab Shack, 26 Center St., Folly Beach. Weigh-in begins at 2 p.m. and ends at 5 p.m. at Folly Beach boat landing; awards immediately following final weigh-in. FISHING RODEO FOR DISABLED CHILDREN: Oct. 25, 9 a.m.-noon. This free annual event provides children with disabilities and their families an opportunity to fish the lake at the Sewee Center, 5821 S.C. Highway 17 North, Awendaw. Some tackle and bait will be provided (though families can bring their own), as well as breakfast, prizes and fish art activities. BOATING

FOLLY BEACH SURF KAYAK COMPETITION: Oct. 17-18; 7-9 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday. $45 registration. This traditional surf competition for men’s, women’s, novice and junior divisions is an exciting and popular event. Even if you don’t paddle, come watch the fun as competitors shred, thrash and slash in the surf. Event is headquartered at the Folly Beach Fishing Pier. 19TH ANNUAL GEORGETOWN WOODEN BOAT SHOW: Oct. 18, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Event takes place on the waterfront at Front and Broad streets. This year’s show will feature one of the Southeast’s finest wooden boat exhibits, a wooden boat building competition, children’s model boat building, boat raffles, maritime arts and crafts, food and music. An estimated 100 classic wooden boats will be displayed in the water, along the boardwalk and on Front Street. Vessels ranging in size from kayaks to yachts will be exhibited in 10 categories: row, canoe, kayak, sail, inboard power, outboard power, classic sail (built prior to 1960), classic power (built prior to 1960), owner designed and built, and century class (100 years or older). KAYAK AND CANOE RACES: Nov. 1 at The Sands at Port Royal in Beaufort. Event begins at 8 a.m., 3- and 6-mile races begin at 10 a.m. in Battery Creek. A cookout and awards ceremony follow the races. Registration forms are available at active.com and highergroundofthelowcountry.com. Entries range from $20 to $40 and must be postmarked by Oct. 30. SURF & SAND

FOLLY BEACH BIRD WALK: Oct. 10, 8:30- 10:30 a.m. Meet at Folly Beach Coast Guard Station. This walk focuses on the northern shoreline and maritime forest of Folly Beach. Expect to see migrating warblers, thrushes, tanagers and buntings, as well as large flocks of migrating seabirds and shorebirds. Free. Call 843-795-4FUN or visit ccprc.com.
