Girlfriends giddy over new movie

The Post and Courier
Friday, May 30, 2008

"The world is waiting with breath that is bated."

For four years, they have watched old episodes on their DVDs, or the sex-scene stripped versions on cable TV.

They've read the book with a hot pink, mock-croc cover about the making of the show. They've gathered with girlfriends to play the trivia game.

All of this they've done while sipping (or gulping, depending on what kind of day they've had) Cosmopolitans.

Today, fans of the HBO series "Sex and the City" have something to raise their glasses to. This is a (Mr.) Big occasion.

As the movie by the same name opens in local theaters, the audience will be reunited with four friends — Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte — whom they've been missing since the show ended in 2004.

Over its six seasons, "Sex and the City" attracted a large, overwhelmingly female following. It resonated with women who were much younger or older than the main characters, with women who will never own a pair of $500 Manolo Blahniks and with women who have closets full, with women who wouldn't think of having sex on a first date and who live miles from the bright lights of any city.

Dr. Carla Kmett Danielson is an assistant professor in MUSC's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. She said the show offers things people can relate to as well as things they fantasize about.

The audience's level of connection with the characters is not seen with many TV shows, Danielson said. Take the popularity of T-shirts that read "I'm a Miranda" or "I'm a Samantha" as evidence, said Danielson (herself a "Carrie").

Like the main character, "my friends mean a lot to me, and I absolutely enjoy a good pair of shoes," she said.

Julianne Stokes of Mount Pleasant considers herself a people-pleasing "Charlotte." She owns every episode and plans to see the movie with four girlfriends Saturday.

"I have such a normal life," Stokes said. "I'm married, I'm having a kid, I've got two dogs and a cat, and then their lives are — to me — so much more entertaining. They're constantly meeting new people, involved in different things. And there's always the fashion aspect to it. I can't afford the stuff that they have, but I love looking at it."

Charleston resident Emilie Swearingen said she enjoys the friendship the women share.

"I love how they're with each other in the good times and the bad times," she said. "Even though they have lots of male relationships, they always go back to their girlfriends."

Swearingen will see the movie with eight women Sunday, after they gather at her home to watch the final two episodes.

Friendship is the biggest theme of "Sex and the City," though not represented in the title, Danielson said. In our fast-paced world, friendship is something more people are striving for, she said.

With the number of women buying advance tickets in groups, the movie appears to help forge those relationships.

Nice work, tripsa.

OK, so last week, the new Indiana Jones movie was local news. Now, a movie about the sex lives of four New Yorkers is local news.

I think it's time this newspaper discloses that it's getting paid to write adverstisement articles.

I loved the show, definitely going to see the movie. Just not this weekend, I am not going to see any other movies until I see "The Chronicles of Narnia".

Allwoman (morning to you and Allbaby), you've NEVER seen SITC??? OMG, I am shocked! Lol

Oh lighten up tripsa and Harpo it's JUST a movie. And while I don't see why this is an article in the post and courier (just like the Indiana jones thing someone pointed out). I did enjoy the TV show decently enough and will be going to see the movie tonight, though it will more than likely be a madhouse in NYC.

AND trust me Harpo there will be plenty of "real men" there...you know all the ones that watched the show, I know plenty though they don't own up to it. Just because a movie or show is seemingly about the lives of women doesn't mean it shouldn't be of any interest to men.

My slight pet peeve though, from my friends who watched the show faithfully insisted on asking me if NYC was like sex and the city when I first moved here...

I can only fall on the floor laughing.

I agree SC, there are some seriously closeted SATC (pardon my previous error) males followers out there. Although, most people think that only gay males watch it, nah, I know quite a few straight guys that watch it!

My mom and granny got me watching that show. I'll admit, it's kinda creepy watching a show about sex with my mom and granny but hey, we didn't get here by thought. Lol

And "sex in the bedroom" is cool...so is "sex in the yard", "sex in the shed", "sex on the dock", "sex on the porch", I could go on and on...lol

Never watched SATC but was furious when Maxim dubbed SJP the unsexiest woman in the world. That was just plain mean.
