3 men accused of beating 2 after party

The Post and Courier
Thursday, May 29, 2008

The Post and Courier

MOUNT PLEASANT — A 26-year-old man suffered broken facial bones when he and a friend were beaten Saturday morning as they walked home from a party, police said.

Walter Markiewicz of Charleston was hospitalized overnight at East Cooper Regional Medical Center for his injuries, friend Josh Staveley-O'Carroll said Wednesday. Staveley-O'Carroll, 29, said he was repeatedly hit in his lower left back and is still limping.

Police arrested Laurie Edward Altman III, 19, Harry M. Hallman III, 22, and John Harden Isaac, 22, on charges of second-degree lynching. All are from Mount Pleasant and were released on $10,000 personal recognizance bonds. Hallman is the grandson of Mayor Harry Hallman Jr.

Staveley-O'Carroll said Wednesday he still doesn't know the reason behind the attack. The suspects and victims had been at a party on Pocahontas Street, a police report said. A fight broke out at the party, but Staveley-O'Carroll said he didn't know why or who was involved.

The two victims left the party shortly before 4 a.m. and were walking to Staveley-O'Carroll's house on Fox Pond Drive. Other people from the party, including the three suspects, walked with them for a while, Staveley-O'Carroll said.

The victims cut through a church parking lot when Staveley-O'Carroll thought he heard someone following them. He said they were confronted by Altman, Hallman and Isaac. "They wanted their one friend to fight with Walter and we could all stand to the side," he said.

One of the men hit Markiewicz, and he went to the ground, Staveley-O'Carroll said. He said the other men tried to push him away, but then someone jumped on him and started beating him.

After the beatings, officers found a wallet nearby that contained Altman's identification, a report stated. Staveley-O'Carroll directed police to Mataoka Street, where the three suspects had earlier split from the group. The three men had blood on their clothing and minor injuries consistent with a fight, according to a report.

Hallman could not be reached Wednesday for comment. Mayor Harry Hallman's wife, Shirley, said their grandson does not live with them and there's nothing they would need to say about his arrest.

Classy and brave (3 on 2). These are truly the cream of Mt P's youth..

Altman to left his wallet to assist the police? Clever and polite too.

I'm so proud of my hometown.

I hope the two that were attacked recover quickly.

Sounds like Altman could make page 9 or 10 in the book of "Stupid Criminals in SC."

(My comment makes me feel like an old person when really I'm on the edge of 30) -- No good comes of being out that late!! --

a crime committed in Mt Pleasant. The land of rainbows and lollipops?!

Beating a man. Hopefully that can also get robbery added if his money was taken from his wallet. Hallman III should get prison time. It would look like LEO were playing favorites if Hallman got the good deal to turn on the others.

This sucks but if it were North Charleston, someone would have got shot. I applaud the boys not for what they did but doing like a man should. you get mad, fight and let it be, not shoot someone from a distance

For fighting, probably no bond is common.

It's getting really bad when kids from nice families are starting to act like common trash.
This freaking town is losing it's collective mind.
Past time to move away....but where?

Posted by NativeSC on May 29, 2008 at 9:20 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Hallman III looks like a lug nut. What a thug. His grandfather has a gin induced glaze on his face, the grandson has a meathead look on his. Put the younger in jail and the older out to pasture.

Posted by jammer on May 29, 2008 at 9:22 a.m. (Suggest removal)

they came from the same party?? then they were actually friends that got drunk and rowdy is all, someone said something the other didn't like so they duked it out

no one was severely hurt and someone obviously learned to keep their mouth shut the next time so let it be...

this isn't news worthy, just kids duking it out... otherwise someone would have been seriously hurt and robbed, gettin a broken nose or the likes in fight like that is no big deal

there were no "victims", no people held at gunpoint or old women robbed etc etc... just too much mouth and testosterone running around mixed with alcohol

Seems as though Nita paid attention to the forum on the Mt. P DUI murder... This time we've got pictures, AND a confirmed link to someone in power. But I don't think the bond would have even been that much had they not hospitalized the guy. I remember back in high school, $250 could get you bonded for a fight.

Please guys, North Charleston, West Ashley, downtown, Mount Pleasnt, Summerville, Goose Creek and Moncks Corner. there are thugs and criminals every where. Or best chances is to stay smart and stay home during the late night hours and let Smith & Wesson keep you company.

Posted by CHRISJIII on May 29, 2008 at 9:47 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Who would have thought that there were thugs living in Mt. Pleasant? I thought that distinction was reserved for N. Charleston and Charleston's Eastside to hear this paper and its posters tell it. By the way, these men are not kids as several of you have stated. They are all over the legal age. Hope that the victims recover and have learned to stay away from drunken thugs at parties and clubs.

Posted by bkeelin on May 29, 2008 at 9:51 a.m. (Suggest removal)

These weren't kids, they were grown men, all adults.

3 on 2 is not just friends duking it out, it's lynching.

Please let's not try to make excuses for these thugs.

Whatever happened to the Porter boys that did the same thing about 4 months ago? What happened to the Gadsen Green case.

Is it me or does it seem like people over the age of 25 are having to many encounters with young adults that can't even purchase beer yet! Why would 25 year old men want to hang with 19 year old kids? Then these kids get violent and beat the crap out of them. I got a suggestion if you are over the age of 25, you are not getting any younger! Find friends your own age.

ColdBeer ,your comment is very well stated.
I totally agree with you!

There was a mention of the use of fists instead of guns in an above post. True this time around, but since they have passed the law on lowering the legal age to 18, don't be surprised when the shootings start.
My son has told me that several people he knows are going out and buying hand guns, simply because they can. Throw alcohol into the mix, and there will be a rise in shootings.
If this had happened anywhere else, it would probably have not been newsworthy.
I have lived in Mt.P. all of my life, and I don't consider myself better than anyone else.
Crime does happen everywhere, especially when you have a population growing as fast as it is East of the Cooper.
There are fight clubs springing up where young people are meeting to duke it out. I don't understand why there is so much anger and desire to inflict pain on others.

He looks like an alien off of MIB ! LOL!

What a bunch of LOSERS ! ! !

allwoman, If I sound stereotypical so be it. I read the same paper as you and the incidents of someone shooting someone is alarming to say the least. I know of cites six times bigger than this area and shootings don't take place like in this town. I still say, get pissed, get in a fight, let it go. It takes a coward to shoot someone from a distance.

Girley, my son recently turned 20, and he doesn't hang out with younger people. The problem that he and his friends have been having lately is young punks are showing up at their gatherings uninvited and provoking these older young men to fight. They arrive intoxicated, and when asked to leave they start throwing punches. Some are learning their lesson by getting their little butts kicked. What scares me is that these same punks are going to come back with guns and seek revenge.
I seriously don't know what is wrong with these brats.
Low self esteem? Boredom? You got me.

Wow are you surprised this didn't make front page or Live 5 news? Stay tuned Mt P this is far from over.... Baby boy Hallman looks like he strongly believes in retalliation!!!! It would have been many more discriminitave comments if they THUGS were black!

RTC - Some kids from "nice" families have always behaved like what you call "trash". In the past, it just wanted reported; it was swept under the rug. People from nice or should I say "upper middle class" families had the connections to have these types of cases disappear. It doesn't matter where you come from or how much money you have, it matters what lies within that person. Many people teach their kids right from wrong, but some kids will forget that teaching and do what they want regardless. If kids are out at 4:00 am, they're probably not thinking about doing what's right.

Posted by pball4f on May 29, 2008 at 12:05 p.m. (Suggest removal)

How long til grandpa Hallman sweeps this under the rug and it all goes away. I would be surprised if these three even get PTI.

Posted by Girleygirl on May 29, 2008 at 12:16 p.m. (Suggest removal)

RTC- tell your son to be careful and if I was him I would not want to be at a party with trouble makers because when the police arrive, they might lie and say they got alcohol from your son or his friends. When trouble arrives, he may need to leave the party regardless of invitation or not.

You can't never be too careful so sometimes you have to use your judgement for the stupid ones not using theirs....

Posted by Charles_Town on May 29, 2008 at 12:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)

While wrong, at least it was done with fists and no one pulled out a gun. While still definitely wrong and in the end probably a waste of time resulting from over indulgence in alcohol.

Coldbeer - Nice research. That's too funny. I just wonder how downtownsurvivor can tell that Mr. Hallman looks like he believes in retaliation from a picture?
The truth of the matter is that if this didn't involve Mayor Hallman's grandson, this wouldn't be news. I have witnessed many fights and seen many people taken to jail (outside of bars, etc) ad it has never made the paper. Possibly in the police blotter but certainly never with pictures.

What ColdBeer said (10:16 AM) -- "DITTO"!

Posted by clem86 on May 29, 2008 at 3:54 p.m. (Suggest removal)

First of all I don't understand why ya'll feel the need to sit here online and comment about a dumb article. I know some of you will feel the need to comment on why I am on here but it is to let everyone know that with all stories obviously there is another side. The article, of course, is using the so called "victims'" side of the story. They never contacted any of the "thugs" about anything. The kids that were beat up had previously beat up kids that were half their age at a party they had no business being it. This was the party that they had all previously come from. The kids that got beat up deserved it and it wasn't 3 on 2 it was at most 2 on 2 one of the 3 that was charged never did a thing. ya'll need to learn to realize that you can't rely on the media for information. Basically this isn't at all newsworthy and the kids that were beat up of course made the other 3 sound a lot worse when that is definitely not the case.

Posted by Rebel_Yell on May 29, 2008 at 4:08 p.m. (Suggest removal)

If they followed them, and then assaulted them, they are going to get some crimes charged against them. You don't look for trouble and then claim you are not a thug unless you are a redneck and all dirt roads lead to your college town. :)

Posted by ercook on May 29, 2008 at 9:43 p.m. (Suggest removal)

None of you really have any idea what you are talking about, except for a few. These so called victims got into a fight earlier in the night with much younger kids, and the so-called thugs had nothing to do with it. These boys are good, kind-hearted people. This is only one side of the story, all six of them were drunk.. it was FOUR in the morning! Now, i never write on walls or do anything like this, but the three guys your all accusing of being criminals, and thugs, are all SMART, hard working, down to earth, good people!!! this is getting way blown out of proportion! And the story is all WRONG!! I dont understand why these "victims" arent in any trouble, just because they got there asses kicked doesnt mean they didnt PROVOKE the fight! hint hint!!!! Besides, what were these old guys doing at a party that ranged from age 17-23???! This is so ridiculous... imagine your 3 best friends getting in a mix up like this, it doesnt mean they are cold blooded criminals or thugs. The article is completely narrow minded. After all the s**t they are getting for this, they are the real "victims" of this incident.

idiots

Posted by Cid95 on May 29, 2008 at 10:36 p.m. (Suggest removal)

To the people above who claim to the know the real story - fair point, I must admit. Almost all news stories about events that I've had firsthand involvement in were either factually flawed or omitted key information.

It may well be the case here. At 4am, drunk, it's hard to say who deserved what.

I did wonder, reading the story, what a 29 year old guy was doing at a party with people that were much closer to high school age.

Posted by Mayor on May 29, 2008 at 10:48 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I'm walking at 4am. That's better than driving.

I think the old guys got their ass kicked because they deserved it. The cop that arrested these kids is an idiot.

The cops were pissed because they had to leave Alex's.

Posted by freethevillage3 on May 30, 2008 at 4:07 p.m. (Suggest removal)

This article is a complete load of s**t. I cant believe people would be so ignorant to read something and think "oh, jeez if its in the paper, it must be true!". Not the case. The story is so one sided it is ridiculous. The real crime isn't that these 30 something douchebags got their faces beat in. No, its that what the hell were they doing at that party in the first place? My guess is they were trying to pick up younger girls since everyone downtown thinks they are homos. Why else would they come crash a college house party? I know these kids for a long time and they just wouldn't go up to somebody and beat their ass for no reason... trust me these dudes had it coming. Sounds to me that they need to grow a d**k and balls and admit they got their s**t packed in by some younger dudes... end of story. They're just lucky they got to talk to the paper first. Fact of the matter is talk is cheap and you better back it up. Act like a 29 year old, not a 9 year old. Oh, and when did a fist become a weapon? What a "crime". Mt P cops ain't got s**t else to do, they wouldn't last a day on the streets of D.C. or Philly.

Scarlet Wilson, don't send these kids to jail and if you do, I can't wait for one of your over privlaged little satan spawns makes a simple mistake in their life. No one likes you in Mount Pleasant... please fall off the face of the earth. I'm proud of my friends because they had their boys backs, how many of you can say that?
