Jennifer Butler Murray
Bill Murray
Academy Award-nominated actor and comedian Bill Murray, who makes regular public appearances in the Lowcountry as a co-owner of the Charleston RiverDogs baseball team, is accused of drug addiction, abandonment, adultery and physically abusing his wife of more than 10 years, according to a recent court filing in Charleston County. Jennifer Butler Murray cites the allegations as grounds for divorce, according to the complaint filed May 12 in family court. Records in the case were sealed Friday by a court order. The Murrays married in 1997 and have four children, all minors.
Jennifer Murray is represented by Charleston attorney Robert Rosen, who declined to comment on the case Wednesday and said his client also would not comment on the filing. Court records do not list an attorney for Bill Murray, who is listed in the complaint as "William Murray" and famously does not have a publicist or agent. A telephone message left for Murray at the RiverDogs office Wednesday was not returned. Jennifer Murray also seeks a restraining order barring Bill Murray from her Sullivan's Island home and asks the court to determine if the couple's premarital agreement is valid and enforceable. The Murrays signed the agreement before their marriage on July 4, 1997. It stipulates that if either spouse files for divorce, both parties retain all of their separate property, waive any right to alimony or support and maintain responsibilities for their children. If the marriage is dissolved and the 23-page premarital agreement is made a part of the order, Bill Murray agrees to pay Jennifer Murray $7 million, according to a copy of the agreement accompanying the complaint. According to the complaint, Jennifer Murray moved into a Sullivan's Island home in 2006 with the couple's four children due to her husband's "adultery, addiction to marijuana and alcohol, abusive behavior, physical abuse, sexual addictions and frequent abandonment." Jennifer Murray purchased the Sullivan's Island beach house in 2006 for $3.65 million, according to county property records. It was at the Sullivan's Island home, according to the complaint, that Murray allegedly abused his wife in November 2007. The six-page court filing says Murray "hit his wife in the face and then told her she was 'lucky he didn't kill her.' " The complaint alleges that Murray physically abused his wife on more than one occasion during the marriage. Bill Murray, a former "Saturday Night Live" cast member, has starred in films such as "Ghostbusters," "Caddyshack," "Meatballs," "Stripes" and "Groundhog Day." He was awarded a Golden Globe for Best Actor and was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in "Lost in Translation." Bill Murray's title with the RiverDogs is Director of Fun. He can be seen at the team's home field on any given night, according to the team Web site. Murray also is a co-owner of Goldklang Group, a sports entertainment firm that represents the marketing and promotion rights for the RiverDogs and several other baseball teams.
Editor's note: Earlier versions of this story gave the wrong name for Jennifer Murray's attorney. The Post and Courier regrets the error.

I would like to know if Richard Rosen offers any expert testimony tying the alleged violent behavior to the alleged addiction to marijuana. That could be interesting. The court’s ruling on the marital agreement could also be very interesting.

I'll bet that the reference to Richard Rosen is a mistake. Richard Rosen has not practiced in family court in twenty years. ROBERT Rosen is the famous domestic lawyer. The newspaper freqently confuses the two of them.

What a shame that the Murray children have to have all these allegations aired publicly. They attend public school locally and I'm sure are already having a hard time dealing with whatever is going on. How about a bit of discretion P&C...

I think it's in poor taste to make this story "news". It should be reserved for the gossip columns. This should be a private family matter but then everyone airs their dirty laundry in public these days (especially when it comes to celebrity divorce). I think both sides need to keep it civil for the children.

I love bill Murray. While I can't say that his on screen persona has to mimick his personal life, I find it hard to believe that he is the wife beating, drug addled adulterer labeled by his wife's divorce attorney. She is trying to ruin his reputation all in the sake of disolving the premarital agreement and taking him to the bank. Hold your head up Bill! Hopefully she'll get what is coming to her...

'Jennifer Murray also seeks a restraining order barring Bill Murray from her Sullivan's Island home and asks the court to determine if the couple's premarital agreement is valid and enforceable.
The Murrays signed the agreement before their marriage on July 4, 1997.'
Well, my guess is that since he is such a savvy businessman, he probably thought to have legal help on the 23-page document, so, of course it would be legal. Just another gold digger trying to scrape the barrel! He was prudent to ask for this as should anyone who made money on their own and wants to share it but not ultimately give it all away should something happen. Smart guy!

Oh let me guess!! Judy Bridges will handle this one?
We need it assigned to Segars-Andrews or Garfinkle. If it is, get your popcorn ready. I'd like to see them stop the media and public from attending all hearings. It would be wise for Rosen to leave his bag of tricks at his office. lol
Better plan on holding court where several hundred can attend the proceedings.

raregar: I can certainly appreciate your perspective. However, you singling out only "certain" people speak volumes.
Speaking as a woman, I can most certainly agree with you that I wouldn't want any man harming my daughters. On the other hand, at this juncture this is simply hearsay and until Bill Murray gets his day in court, I prefer not to crucify him.
As for me, STRIPES rocked! I was just dumb enough to think that the joining the army would be as fun. Boy was I ever wrong! LOLOLOLOL

I agree with Hey_U_Guys.
10 years of abuse and debauchery he's supposedly getting into and she's just now leaving him? The way I see it, to be in a fight, somehow you have to get involved or be the one that started it.
You women need to admit you all have friends like this and you have told them and told them and told them to leave the douchebag, but they never do because of something mental with them , Women like this have low self-esteem issues or the subliminally crave the abuse-attention.
Women are all the same.....he probably was going to slow down her allowance train and she got into a tizzy. Either that or she's hanging on some other dude's schween that buys her more things.
Two words......premarital agreement. Now go get a job like the rest of us.

"MEN WHO GOT DOGGED BY THEIR WOMEN are all the same"
“MEN WHO CAN’T KEEP A WOMAN are all the same”
“MEN WHO CAN’T GET A WOMAN are all the same”
Be careful with the generalizations GeneVan. Notice how easily interchangeable they can be?

Regardless of what we may think about "who did what", it's not hard for me to believe that anyone is able to do anything while under the influence of drugs/alcohol.
Staying in the marriage for 10 years, while you're getting abused? Maybe. I'm sure his rantings have ebbed and flowed over the years, and each time he stayed sober for a while, she thought she could save their marriage. Ten years doesn't necessarily mean she was abused every day.
Gold digger? Maybe.....but most gold diggers are too concerned with their looks and social calendar to go through the pregnancy and delivery of 4 children, plus the life time commitment to them.
At least they had the sense to leave California; hopefully the children haven't witnessed the alleged tirades, especially since they are so young.
I hope their problems can be resolved amicably for the sake of the children. And, if what she alleges is true, Bill will get the help he needs.

I was serious about putting out more, woman of her age often loose the drive and men usually don't leaving a imbalance of the sex life. When the sex life is imbalanced, all other things seem to grow out of proportion. Based on the allegations, that's my guess. And to add the fact that Bill could probably get laid on command just adds fuel to the fire.

barefoot, that old myth has been proven wrong for years now. In fact they peak in the early 20's as men do. Pre-menopause is hell on a woman's sex drive due to hormone imbalance but hormone therapy which includes testosterone increases the risk of breast cancer. I am at the age I'm referring to and the divorce rate is as high as teenage couples. Many, many of my friends have divorced in this age group.

early: I have to respectfully disagree with you. Generally women do have some issues immediately preceding and during menopause due to fluctuation and then decreasing hormonal levels. However, sexually speaking women are far more likely to enjoy sex than their male counterparts for no other reason than physically we can enjoy and sustain sexual activity far longer than men. As men age virility is affected by weight, high blood pressure and diabetes. “Blood flow ain’t what it used to be”
Conversely women, other than occasional vaginal dryness (due to hormonal fluctuations & easily remedied with OTC products) have no physical impediment to enjoying sex. Granted during their 40’s & 50’s there are increased numbers of women who have hysterectomies, but after healing process, sex becomes an even freer activity without the fear of pregnancy. Nope, Early, judging by the millions of prescriptions of Viagra, Cialis and the like, men are the ones needing more assistance with having a fulfilling sex later in life.
Now I will agree that some women (of all ages) don’t participate in sex as much as their partners would like because they are burdened by the ‘responsibilities’ of work, housework, child rearing and go without much needed support in those areas and frankly are too tired or too resentful to have sex. Partners should help alleviate some of those stresses if they want frequent and GOOD sex. In other cases some women use sex as a tool of control or punishment. For those women counseling might help them for such tactics can and do push partners into the arms of more willing women. But the divorce rate is increasing in older couples for a myriad of reasons, not just because hubbie doesn’t get enough lovin’ from his wifefy.

I think you are referring to woman in their early 40's and men in their 60's. Pre-menopause age is somewhat hereditary and can be a wide spread, no pun intended:)
Men in their 40's can last far longer than any boy in their 20's,,,lol

To add to my previous comment:
Due to a medical condition I was medically placed into menopause in my late 30’s and though it was very difficult for the first few months, my libido was not permanently affected. In fact emotionally and mentally I’m in a far better place than I was in my 20’s and early 30’s and able to enjoy life far better now than ever.
All but one of my close friends are in their late 40s, 50s and 60s and many of them are concerned (or complain lol) about their sex life or lack thereof. There does seem to be a disconnect between men and women as to what constitutes a good sex life.
Which is pretty funny, because for some of the single people out here, just having a sex life would be nice!!!!!!!

I don't know, but if I understand this, they signed a pre-nup that says in a divorce, she walks away with $7 million? If she's getting abused, I'd think she'd just take the kids and $7 mill and hit the road, not wait 10 years, but who knows?

Lol And my fiance is 4 years younger than I am but I run through him regularly. Teehee
Hey ey, isnt there a really nice one in Columbia? I think it's one of those "hidden gems". Lol
Hey Early, where are ya? There are still lots of women that love "puttin out"!

OK girls, when I was 14 it lasted 2.4 seconds, when I was 20 I was up to 35 seconds and then 3 whole minutes,,,lmfao twice. My wife added one word to her vocabulary. When we first got married she said " your through?" and as I got older she said " are you through yet?" men are like fine wine, we get better with age. Don't need the lubes and pre-stimulation as older women, maybe a pump or drugs but no lubes. Anyway, tag your it:)

archdude, as far as being too conservative, I am against sex outside of marriage, but as far as sex in marriage, let's just say I agree with Ric Flair on this one
"Whooo, all night long, baby!!" Married people need to drop the old notion that married sex is boring. My advice to young couples is this; get in on, often, very often, as much as possible. It certainly would cut the divorce rate. When your spouse annoys you and you feel like leaving, you'd start thinking "man, I don't want to give that up!" And guys, remember this, the more often she is "satisfied", the more you'll get.

While there is no justification for the physical abuse of another person, it is hard to believe she let this go on in these enlightened times for over 10 years and now offers it as a basis for divorce.
And as for sexual addiction, I believe that was a term developed by women's libbers in an effort to negatize virility in the absence of their own diminished muliebrity. In fact, most women don't even understand what the word means. If they did, they could learn to be proud of having it, and enjoy it while they can.
That leaves drug addiction, adultery, and abandonment, if she has proof. The question does arise as to how may children she had with him after she realized these shortcomings, and why?
Like all troubled marriages, it is a pity they did not seek counseling early and often. Except where a clear danger to life and limb exist, the law should require counseling before a divorce is granted.
In the backward State of South Carolina, where there is no requirement for any medical or psychological testing beforehand, many people who should never get married do so - often for the silliest of reasons - and with disastrous consequences.
They say it's a free country. But I can find nothing in the constitution that suspends an obligation to use due diligence when entering into a contractual agreement. Fortunately for those who make a living providing legal counsel, our educational system thoroughly fails to teach common sense in these matters.
And until courses in social responsibility and parenting join sex education in the classrooms, thing will never get any better.

Since she filed the divorce after 10 years of "abuse"
I would suspect a couple of things.
1. shes bored
2. her lawyer, probably referred to her by one of her man-hating friends, "helped" her come up with the "charges" to humiliate and coerce Bill Murray into a quick settlement.
3. shes looking to get rich without the baggage of having to depend on her husband who worked his entire life to acquire the asset that she intends to steal.
4. shes a liar
5. Godspeed Bill Murray your "wife" and her parasite lawyer are going to do everything and anything to seperate you from your money. Dont ever give in. Fight it for the next 100 years. Fight it for yourself and every guy out there destroyed by the corrupt, feminized "family courts".

Poor thing--under the pre-nup, she only gets 7 million; the big house on sullivans and probaly another 1 million a year for child support until the kids turn 18. She is doing this out of spite and greed. I hope the pre-nup holds up and Bill holds out. If he beat her, let's see the photos--if there is not one of a bruised woman, this is a scam and I don't subscribe to the verbal abuse myth. If that was the case, all husbands have been abused by yaking wives.
Bill rules but we will probably lose this in-town celebrity and get the moneydigging wife instead. What a shame.

MY PRIVATE PARTS DIED
An old man, Mr. Wallace, was living in a nursing home.
One day he appeared to be very sad and depressed.
Nurse Tracy asked him if there was anything wrong,
'Yes, Nurse Tracy,' said Mr. Wallace
'My Private Part died today, and I am very sad.'
Knowing her patients were a little forgetful and sometimes a little crazy, she replied, 'Oh, I'm so sorry, Mr. Wallace. Please accept my condolences.'
The following day, Mr. Wallace was walking down the hall with his Private Part hanging out of his pajamas.
He met Nurse Tracy. 'Mr. Wallace,' she said, 'You shouldn't be walking down the hall like that.
Please put your Private Part back inside your pajamas.'
'But, Nurse Tracy I can't,' replied Mr. Wallace. 'I told you yesterday that my Private Part died.
'Yes,' said Nurse Tracy, 'you did tell me that, but why is it hanging out of your pajamas?'
(You've gotta love this ....)
'Well,' he replied, 'Today is the viewing.'

C'mon here... He was one of the stars of Saturday Night Live. Did she really think she was marrying a saint?

I think this is a setup!
Wife to be signs a prenup waits a few years then tells this crazy story of abuse so she can get the money and keep Bill from running in the senate race!

The only thing that is certain in this matter is that Rosen will make a ton of money... everyone else involved is screwed.

This article makes me sick. A lot of celebs leave the hollywood area to come to places like Charleston so they aren't hounded all the time. I can't believe the P and C would stoop so low as to publish this. The writer of this article is just trying to ride on Bill's coat tails as is the P and C. They didn't need to give out the details leave that for the scum tabloids, perez hilton and the papparazzi. Shame on you p and c. Regardless of status in society everyone deserves privacy. Luckily for the children school will be out soon if it isn't already so atleast they wouldn't have to go through the teasing they most likely would have endured. I hope it works out for the best for everyone involved and for the children I hope this is a very fast process!!! If it turns out to be true that he did the things he was accused of, I hope he gets some help

When I was younger my parents took me and my friends to a Rainbows game. We never sat still, but during one venture back to where my parents were sitting I noticed this really ugly guy with glasses and pock marks and a flannel shirt. My dad smiled at me when he saw me looking at this dude and told me to have a seat. I was like...NO WAY! During the ride home my mom asked me if I knew who the guy was, and after telling her no, she informed me that it was Bill Murray. After hearing that I could see in my mind that it was him. My dad scooted towards him and told Bill that my wife thinks she recogonizes you. Bill stood up, said "Nope, she doesn't recogonize me", threw away his popcorn and left. What an ass, it's not like my mom was going to beg for an autograph or bombard him with a million questions. Geez Bill, watch that first step, its a doozy!

If anyone is curious why case files involving children should be sealed, the above comments make the case.
What was that saying about people in glass houses throwing stones?

I didn't think pre-nups were legal in South Carolina. Does anyone know for certain either way?

No offense Mr. & Mrs. Murray, but who cares? People are people and inevitably have problems. Why air it publicly? This is Charleston, where people are expected to possess a modicum of decorum.

Regis College rules. Bill Murray rules. How can anyone live with someone else for 10 years?
Could be a record posts today. Ya'll are nuts.

pre nups are legal in sc. My sister and her husband have one. What I want to know is how they could be illegal :)

I should have said invalid rather than illegal. I know that in some states their courts do not recognize the validity of pre-nups. I wasn't sure where SC stood on this issue. Sorry for misspeaking.
