Folly Beach considers smoking ban

The Post and Courier
Tuesday, May 27, 2008

Folly Beach City Council is expected to vote tonight on a smoking ban after a public hearing on the topic. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in City Hall, 21 Center St.

The ordinance would prohibit smoking in places of employment and enclosed public places, including restaurants and bars. Smoking would be permitted on those businesses’ decks and patios.

The city’s only private club, The Sand Dollar, would be exempt. Its membership card costs $1.

Half of the six council members are introducing the ordinance, which used Greenville’s smoking ban as a model.

Mayor Carl Beckmann Jr. has said the decision of whether to allow smoking should be left to individual businesses.

Recently the state Supreme Court unanimously upheld the constitutionality of local governments to pass smoking bans for indoor public places. While Mount Pleasant, Sullivan’s Island and Charleston have passed such ordinances, North Charleston voted earlier this month not to ban smoking in public places.

Dont smoke, never have and I find it repulsive, but these smokoing rules are out of hand. If I owned a business (especially a bar) I would be furious if this type of restriction was placed on me. As a customer, when I walk into an establishment and it is too smokey for me to handle, I leave. Those who are working in such places have the right to leave that place of employment whenever they want. I understand that the employer has a responsibility to keep an employee safe, but the line of work dictates what is safe. Many jobs are inherenlty dangerous but we dont ban these jobs. Police must respond to shootings (dangerous), coal miners go underground to work (dangerous), crab fisherman go into the Bering sea to fish (dangerous). We dont outlaw these professions..... we also dont force people to work these jobs. Governments, on all levels, are out of hand. Whats next, no fried foods in restaurants b/c the fryer might burn the cook? The government acts as if it is a teacher in preschool, who has to keep an eye on all of us for our own good.
