Mt. P. seeks names for war memorial

Friday's Memorial Waterfront Park groundbreaking in Mount Pleasant set in motion many months of hard work and planning that will culminate with the opening of the park in the summer of 2009.

The War Memorial Study Committee is part of this venture and has spent 18 months helping craft the vision for the memorial. Part of the committee's task has been to identify war heroes who have lost their lives in military conflicts dating back to the Revolutionary War and leading to the present day War on Terror.

The War Memorial Study Committee has identified 72 names of war dead and would like residents to submit any names of people who may have been inadvertently omitted from the list.

Families of Mount Pleasant men and women who have served and given their lives during military conflicts can submit documentation to the Mount Pleasant Public Information Office. Anyone from Mount Pleasant or Christ Church Parish who has died in combat during a military conflict is eligible. The deadline is June 30.

The names will be engraved on a cast stone panel above the reflecting pool facing the focal point of the memorial — a seated grieving female figure holding an American flag.

The study committee is composed of Brig. Gen. Hugh B. Tant, III, chairman; Myron Harrington, vice chair; Council member Joe Bustos; Council member Ken Glasson; Council member Kruger Smith; Pat Waters; Mac Burdette; and Ted Summerford.

ECCO offers poverty course

East Cooper Community Outreach is holding a workshop in June for adults who live in poverty.

The 15-week course teaches participants how to build up their emotional, social, and economic resources with a goal of becoming self sufficient.

The class is part of outreach's out of poverty initiative that began last year, said Jack Little, the organization's executive director.

Six women graduated from a pilot class held at the end of 2007. Three of those women now have a team of volunteer coaches to help mentor them for the long-term, Little said.

Participants must be at least 18 years old and live or work in the East Cooper area.

Individuals chosen to participate will receive funds to participate.

To apply, pick up an application at East Cooper Community Outreach, 1145 Six Mile Road, Mount Pleasant. Applications may also be obtained by contacting Katy Gerloff at 849-9220, ext. 36, or kgerloff@eccocharleston.org.
