EMT arrested on lewd act charges

Stewart
Berkeley County sheriff's deputies arrested a Charleston County emergency medical technician Friday on charges of committing a lewd act on a child under 16, authorities said.
Gerald Stewart of 100 Ruffin Court in Summerville also was the driver of an ambulance involved in a fatal crash March 25 on Calhoun Street in downtown Charleston that killed College of Charleston student Emily J. Salisbury.
Charleston County put Stewart on administrative leave after learning of the arrest, according to a release. He has been an EMS employee since 2006.
According to Dan Moon, public information officer for the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office, Stewart received a $10,000 surety bond after a bond hearing Friday at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center.

Well this is certainly interesting.
If he is guilty of this charge then it does indicate that this person has a reckless disregard for others (to put it mildly)that many witnessed or deduced from the description of the fatal accident on Calhoun St.
At the time of the article about that accident, people who questioned the judgment of the ambulance driver were berated for daring to do so. Somehow many twisted the concern/questioning about what had happened on Calhoun
St. to mean that the service EMTs provide is not appreciated.
I, for one, do greatly appreciate & understand the job that they do. I'd just rather they not kill or harm someone on the way to doing it.

I will add however, that these types of charges are so damning that even if the person is proven to be innocent, the stigma will always linger.
Therefore, I believe that the names & photos of those charged should not be publicly announced unless & until there is a plea or conviction, after which their names & pictures should be broadcast far & wide.

Convicted child molesters should get the death penalty.

I say he's a drug addict also, test him for drugs. No rightful human being is a child molester. Seems he also kinda blew the accident away as a misdemeanor as well. Blast his ass! He is not fit for society, send him front line to Iraq with a bb gun!

It is not that "He's a pervert who cant drive??".
The point is that as an EMT he is trained to save & "do no harm". As an EMT vehicle driver, he is trained to use good judgment about when he can speed, disregard certain traffic laws, etc. & when it is not safe to do so. Many who witnessed this accident felt that the driver recklessly disregarded conditions. If he is guilty of this charge, there does seem to be a pattern.
Speaking of points- " Look at him.."??? What does that have to do with anything? I do not imagine that anyone's mug shot makes him/her look a vision of loveliness & righteousness.

If I ever had a mug shot, it would be absolutely stunning :)

I wonder if this is Gerald "Keith" Stewart, who was charged with shifting lanes improperly in 2006. Not a major crime by any means, but interesting considering the EMS accident. If it's the same guy.

with the exception of "abitskeptical" these posts make me sick. is there a pattern or isn't WOW you folks are the next CSI team for sure. Here is the deal at the end of the day, this is america and thank god for that b/c with all the posts from the accident and now this I have come to the conclusion that the masses are just that one mindless mob mentality. anyways if he is guilty than so be it and let the punishment come as the courts/judge/jury see fit and if he is guilty of the new charges than again let the punishment come but until he is proven guilty by a court of law with lawyers and judges and possibly a jury all this is mindless conjecture by a group of busy bodies. oh and i am assuming you are all tax payers as well so bear this in mind when commenting on fire/police/ems we are all human and we are all trained to not make mistakes but it happens and yes it is unfortunate when it does i.e sofa store, the ambulance accident but until the taxpaying public wants to pay more taxes then the accidents can and will happen regardless of how hard people train or care it is enevitable and always unfortunate and always destroying to a community. and regardless of what everyone may believe punishments do come but it takes time to gather and process evidence and for the powers to be NOT YOU to make a just correct decision and go on from there.

bentjustice, there seems to be some confusion on your part. We are not out in the streets with baseballs bats in our hands hunting this guy down. We're on the internet, posting opinions on a website designed for people to, well... post opinions. Get a hold of yourself. Sit back, relax and get your mind straight. Your user name here doesn't appear to be the only thing "bent" on your end.
It's perfectly OK for me to say that, if convicted, this guy deserves the death penalty. That's my opinion. You can state yours too. Based on your last post, the majority of people here would most likely disagree with anything you have to say, but you sure are welcome to say it. That's how these opinion things work. We all have them and goodness knows, we all love to share them.
The biggest problem I see here is your assumption that we don't know how the Justice System works. Get over yourself. You're no more intelligent than the next guy (or gal).

bentjustice--I agree with ColdBeer--you need to calm down & then you need to put a bit more punctuation in your post.
I often express the thought that people often are charged & even convicted of crimes they did not do, so I do indeed recognize that the concept of innocent until proven guilty is very important.
HOWEVER, some crimes are so heinous that bail is not granted. Unfortunately in these cases, the innocent as well as the guilty have to wait for a trial while sitting in jail.
Child molestation should be one of those crimes. The welfare & protection of the child, i.e.,the child's right to be safe, should trump the accused's right to bail.

Just for the record, I went to school with Keith and I just cannot imagine him doing anything like that. I am hoping that there is some mistake. I agree with the other poster that suggested we wait until the facts come out before we judge. I think it is sad that people are put on parade like that before ever being given the chance to be tried. What about his wife and children? What happened until "innocent until proven guilty"? It is unfair to convict him without even seeing the evidence. I hurt for all the children who are abused every day and agree that those molestors should be treated as harshly as the law allows. But until they are proven guilty, I don't believe that names and faces should be paraded through the media so carelessly. It is a shame. Prayers go out to both sides.

You know, it's hard to swallow that someone out of the blue would get accused of something like this. He had to put himself in a situation that he probably knew better to get in and this is what happens. Yes innocent to proven guilty but he did something wrong to be in his position. I stick by my comments!

Early, people are unjustly & falsely accused of things all the time. I am not saying this guy was or was not rightly or wrongly accused--I just do not have enough information. What I am saying is that being accused of something does not always mean the person put themselves in the position to be accused. Also, it does not mean they deserve to be accused wrongfully.
For years one of my daughter's friends(I'll call her Jane) claimed that one of her brother's friends raped her when she was 12 & her brother's friend was 17. This allegedly happened when the friend spent the night with Jane's brother. Jane's parents both are health care professionals. Jane has 2 older brothers. Both parents were home & asleep, as were Jane's 2 brothers, when Jane claims she was raped. Jane waited until there would be no 'physical evidence' before reporting this "rape" & so charges were never pressed against the boy, but his parents were informed.
Jane is now 19 & admitted to my daughter sometime last year that she made the whole thing up to get attention.
I guess you could say that a 17 year old boy put himself in the position of being accused of this by spending the night with his friend in the stable home environment of his friend's family, but that seems somewhat ridiculous to me.
BTW my daughter is no longer friends with this girl for a # of reasons...one of which is that she accused my daughter of something she did not do.(Imagine that!) My husband & I had expressed concern to our daughter about this girl for a while, because we saw that Jane always seemed to be creating some sort of chaos--but she & our daughter had known each other since they were young so they had a long history. Our daughter finally realized that that history is the only thing they had left in common.
My daughter finally had to take out an order of no contact against this girl through the college they both attend to make sure she was protected from this young person.
