Goydos a star for a week

PGA Tour golfer Paul Goydos describes himself as a journeyman. But for a weekend, anyway, he was one of golf's biggest stars. Goydos lost to Sergio Garcia in a one-hole playoff last Sunday in The Players Championship, becoming the first tournament runnerup to ever cash a check for more than $1 million — $1.026 million. It was pointed out this week at the AT&T Classic in Duluth, Ga., that Goydos was the fifth most Googled name on the Internet last Saturday. "Yeah, fifth on Saturday and ninth on Sunday. I'm trying to figure out what this nation is thinking about," said Goydos, a journeyman player who has won twice in a lengthy PGA Tour career, the most recent coming in Hawaii at the start of the 2007 season. After failing to get up and down for par on the final hole of regulation, Goydos dunked his tee shot into the water on the island green 17th. Ironically, not only was he the last player to do so in The Players Championship, on Thursday he was the first player to drown a golf ball at 17. "I felt like Tiger Woods for a day," Goydos said, "maybe not from a skill's standpoint, but from a crowd support standpoint. They couldn't have been pulling harder for me."
