Bishop England's Navarro earns top Optimist honor

Liza Navarro of Bishop England High School has been named the Optimist Club of Charleston's Athlete of the Year.
Navarro, a senior, ran cross country and track and field for the Bishops. She finished 11th at the Class AA state meet in cross country, while finishing fifth and eighth respectively in the 3,200- and 1,600-meter runs at the state track meet.
She is ranked No. 1 academically in her class.
The award is based on athletic achievements, classroom performance and volunteer work. Chelsie Lisenby of Summerville was second runner-up, while Kaitlyn Rubino of Wando was first runner-up.
The Optimist Club's all-star volleyball team includes Larz Chabra and Christina Glover, Wando; Rachel Ellyn and Hayley Harrell, Ashley Hall; Hannah Chessman, Bishop England and Chelsey Kight, West Ashley.
Alexis Glover of Wando is coach of the year.
The all-star basketball team includes Shanola Council, Summerville; Chentien Ladson, West Ashley; Mallory Molony, Bishop England; Karleen Paulin, Fort Dorchester and Rubino, Wando.
Jimmy Brown of North Charleston is coach of the year.
The all-star track and field team includes Talyor Stubbs, James Island; Raven White, Berkeley; Searra Jones, Fort Dorchester and Ashley Tucker, Bishop England.
Eric Gambrell of Berkeley is coach of the year.
Magnet finishes second
Academic Magnet finished second in the state in Class A golf championships.
Christ Church won the two-day event, which was contested at the Links at Stoney Point, with a score of 653.
The Raptors were 18 strokes behind to claim second.
Academic Magnet's Elliot Mappus earned all-state honors with a two-day total of 161.
Stall names coach
Stall has hired Mitch White as its girls' basketball coach.
Coach White started in Charleston County School District in 1983 at St. Andrews High School coaching football, girls' basketball and baseball. He coached girls' basketball at Middleton and Wando.
Coach White's collegiate experience included stops at University of Alabama Birmingham and University of New Orleans, where he served as the first assistant and recruiting coordinator.
Stall principal Dan Conner had high praise for White.
'Mitch White's coaching resume speaks for itself,' he said 'His confidence and basketball knowledge have my blood pumping. He is a good fit for our kids.'
SCISA stars
SCISA has announced its all-state soccer selections.
Lowcountry players named to the girls' team include Kathleen Blum, Catherine Calloway and Alexandra Fuller, Hilton Head Prep; Brittney Chisolm and Jessica Day, Hilton Head Christian; Sarah Halpren, Ashley Hall; Whitney Jordan and Kimrey Angoti-Smith, Pinewood Prep; Lexie Pearl, Northwood Academy; Alexis Spearman and Chelsea Mixson, Beaufort Academy, Mallory Woodhead and Alex Kieth, Porter-Gaud.
Local selections on the boys' team include Andrew Bennett and William Hodde, Hilton Head Prep; Jack Davis and Mark McDevitt, Hilton Head Christian; William Eouch and James Poulnot, Porter-Gaud; Alex Filo, Malcolm Reed and Trey Riedmayer, Pinewood Prep and Steven Moody and Cody Mullins, Northwood Academy.
Big performance
Berkeley freshman Leanna Morrison had a big performance at the state meet last weekend. She won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.13. That time qualified her for the Nike Outdoor Nationals.
The Stags also won the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:57.92.
