Friday night film at IOP Rec Center

"The Goonies" movie is coming to the Isle of Palms Recreation Center at 8 p.m. Friday.

The film, rated PG, will show on a large, outdoor screen on the multipurpose field. Purchase popcorn, candy bars and water at the event or bring snacks. Remember that golf carts cannot be driven on the island after dark.

Sand sculpting contest May 31

The annual Piccolo Spoleto Sand Sculpting Competition will be held at 9 a.m. May 31, turning Isle of Palms beaches into works of art.

The contest is open to anyone. Register by calling the Rec Center at 886-8294 or register at 8:30 a.m. on the day of the event.

First-, second- and third-place winners will be awarded in age categories: adult, young adult, children, and family. Winners will also be named for best architecture and most creative. One best-in-show winner will win the top prize. Registration forms and competition rules are available on the city's Web site: iop.net. For more information call 886-8294.

Piccolo Spoleto goes to the beach

A Piccolo Spoleto improv competition will take place on the beach in June.

It's half game show and half sporting event in which five improvisers will go head-to-head at 7 p.m. June 7 in scenes based on audience suggestions. The audience will also decide who's the champion.

Tickets are free but must be obtained in advance at the city's recreation department.
