Beach cleanups

Bimonthly beach cleanups are starting on Folly Beach again on the Tuesdays before recycling days, 5:30-7 p.m.

Volunteers would have to sweep only once a month and a total of six times through the tourist season. Contact project team leader Marty Morganello at mmorganello@bellsouth.net.

Democrats to meet

James Island/Folly Beach Democrats will meet at 7 tonight at the Sol Legare Community Center, 1964 Sol Legare Road, a half-mile past Backman's Seafood.

A sign beside the road will announce the meeting. Refreshments will be served before the meeting. The agenda includes discussion of new steps for the November elections and naming standing committee chairmen.

Sea kayaking

Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission is sponsoring Kayak Quickstart sea kayak instructional classes 6-8 p.m. May 23 for ages 16 and up at James Island County Park.

The cost is $12 or $10 with a CCR discount.

During the two-hour hands-on informal program, experienced guides will teach participants how to enjoy the local waterways and wildlife from a sea kayak.
