NARFE Summerville

The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, Summerville Chapter, will meet at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Faith Sellers Senior Center, 312 N. Laurel St.

The speaker will be Susan Durand of the Social Security Adminstration.

All civilian federal employees, retirees, spouses and surviving spouses are invited. There will be refreshments and a door prize. Members should bring a snack to share.

NARFE 72

The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, Chapter 72, will meet at 10 a.m. Friday at Cherokee Place Methodist Church, North.

The speaker for the meeting will be Cathy Morton, 211 community resource manager. A covered-dish luncheon will follow the meeting. All current and retired federal employees and their spouses are invited.

Greenhurst Community Crime Watch meeting will be held at 7 p.m. today at the Miles Road Baptist Church.

Beit Midrash

Beit Midrash of Charleston will meet to learn about the parallels of the Feast of Pentecost and the Feast of Shavuot at 6:30 p.m. June 7 at Citadel Square Baptist Church chapel, 328 Meeting St.

Artist Guild

For centuries, painters have used the palette as a way to get paint from tube to brush to canvas. Now, the palette becomes the canvas as members of the Charleston Artist Guild turn this painter's tool into creative works of art.

The Charleston Artist Guild will present an art show, "The Painted Palettes at Piccolo Spoleto," 10 a.m.-5 p.m. May 23-June 5 at the Charleston Artist Guild Gallery, 6 North Atlantic Wharf, downtown Charleston. A reception will be held 5-8 p.m. June 5. The public is invited.

More than 75 painted palettes will be displayed in various media, including oil, watercolor, acrylic, photography, printmaking and pastel.

Airborne chapter

The Airborne Association, Swamp Fox chapter, meets the third Saturday of the month at 1 p.m. at American Legion Post 166, 116 Howe Hall Road, off Redbank Road in Goose Creek.

The chapter is open to active and ex-military personnel of all branches of service who qualified to wear the "Jump Wings." Participants do not have to be a member of the American Legion to participate.

Austen Society

The Jane Austen Society of North America, S.C. Region, will meet at 1:30 p.m. May 17 in the meeting room of the Johns Island Regional Library, 3531 Maybank Highway.

The film, "The Jane Austen Book Club," will be shown.

Nonmembers are welcome for the program and refreshments.

GOP Women

The next meeting of the Charleston County Republican Women will be at 11:30 a.m. May 27 at the Country Club of Charleston.

Nancy Cook will speak.

A workshop presentation on "Get Out the Vote" will be held along with a club auction.

Stadium sale

The Citadel Women's Club will hold its annual yard sale 8 a.m.-noon May 24 at the Altman Center in the end zone at Johnson Hagood Stadium on Hagood Avenue at Fishburne Street.

Everything from cleaning supplies, towels and T-shirts to furniture, electronics and school supplies will be on sale for rock-bottom prices.

All proceeds to support scholarships for cadets.

The annual stadium sale started 12 years ago when it was noted that cadets discarded many usable items at the end of each year.

It's not too late to donate items to the yard sale.

Metal Detecting

Tin Can Sailors

The Tin Can Sailors of Goose Creek meet at American Legion Post 166, 116 Howe Hall Road, at 7:30 p.m. the fourth Wednesday of every month.

The association is open to all destroyer tender sailors.

Submarine veterans

The U.S. Submarine Veterans Charleston Base holds its membership meeting the second Thursday of every month at the Fleet Reserve Association Home, 99 Wisteria Road, Goose Creek.

Social hour starts at 6 p.m. with the business meeting at 7. Membership is open to those who have qualified in submarines and received an honorable discharge from the Navy.

Decorative painters

The Charleston Chapter of Decorative Painters meets 9 a.m.-1 p.m. the fourth Saturday of every month at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 150 E. Montague Ave., North Charleston.

The meeting is open to artists who are interested in exploring the art form.

The scope of decorative painting is wide, covering all styles of painting and employing all mediums.

Membership is open to everyone regardless of talent. Two meetings may be attended as a guest.

After a short business meeting, a program of painting, learning and sharing new techniques is held.

Needlepoint Guild

The Charleston Chapter of the American Needlepoint Guild meets 10 a.m.-2 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of each month at Old St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 2604 Ashley River Road. "Stitch-ins" are held 10 a.m.-noon other Tuesdays.

Stitching enthusiasts from all experience levels can attend. Call 853-5879 or 852-9849.

Scottish dancers

The Charleston Scottish Country Dancers meet 7:30-9 p.m. Thursdays at the Felix C. Davis Community Center, 4800 Park Circle, North Charleston.

The nonprofit group's dance classes are free, and there are no dues. Call 745-1028.

Embroiderers Guild

The Magnolia Chapter of the Embroiderers Guild of America meets 1:30-4 p.m. the second Sunday of each month and is open to anyone interested in embroidery and the needle arts.

All levels of needle artists and newcomers can visit.

Sampler Guild

The Charleston Sampler Guild meets at 1 p.m. the fourth Monday of each month at the Charleston Museum.

The guild's goal is to preserve the historical integrity of the needleworker and to promote the educational aspects of the needle arts with others.

Members are not required to stitch, just be interested in the history of needlework.

The guild works closely with the museum in achieving its goals and supports the museum in the acquisition of Charleston samplers.

Gamecock meeting

Coach Shane Beamer will be the featured speaker at the spring meeting of the Tri-county Gamecock Clubs on May 20 at Alhambra Hall in Mount Pleasant.

The public is welcome. You do not have to be a Gamecock Club member to attend.

This also will be the inaugural meeting of the Junior Gamecock Club (age 12 and under) featuring USC's mascot Cocky.

Beamer and Cocky will be accompanied by several representatives of the Gamecock Club from Columbia who will answer questions about the membership process.

Doors open at 5 p.m. with dinner served at 6. Tickets are $10 per person (Junior Gamecocks admitted free). A cash bar will be available.

Tickets are limited and are available at Bobby Hartin's Sports Grill in West Ashley, The Point Grill in Mount Pleasant, Simmons Barber Shop in Summerville and the Moncks Corner Flower Shop.
