Jammin'! Local bar in Esquire

Tuesday, May 13, 2008

The Windjammer on the Isle of Palms is known by Lowcountry locals as a quality, beach-front bar for volleyball, ice-cold beer, good cheeseburgers, cool rock shows and its famous bikini contests.

Judging from the June edition of Esquire, someone must have let the Lowcountry's sandy little secret out of the pail.

The magazine has a short feature on the bar in its list of "Best Bars in America 2008."

The compilation of high-profile watering holes will be released Thursday.

"It's cool," said managing partner Bobby Ross, who is spending his 29th summer running the club.

"I sent them some pictures a while back, after a writer contacted me via e-mail, so I knew something might be happening," Ross said. "He said it would be a positive piece."

The magazine's description of the Windjammer details a first impression of the bar at 1008 Ocean Blvd. while walking in from a sunny day at the beach.

"There's a moment — right at the door — when you go completely blind, your sun-scorched retinas failing to immediately adjust to the dark of the bar," the Esquire reviewer writes. "And all at once it comes clear — the Corona bottles, the leathery old men shooting pool, the most beautiful women you've ever seen."

When asked if the story might help business at the bar this summer, Ross answered with a laugh, "I don't know, but I think lower gas prices might."

For each bar that the magazine profiled, Esquire suggested a "drink of choice."

At the Windjammer, the magazine says it's Bud Light in a can.
