Beamer to visit Gamecock Club

State Report

South Carolina assistant football coach Shane Beamer will be the featured speaker at the spring meeting of the tri-county Gamecock Clubs on May 20 at Alhambra Hall in Mount Pleasant.

The meeting is open to club members and non-members. This will also be the inaugural meeting of the Junior Gamecock Club (age 12 and under) featuring USC mascot Cocky.

Doors open at 5 p.m. with dinner served at 6. Tickets are $10 per person (Junior Gamecocks admitted free). A cash bar will be available. There will be a special seating section where Junior Gamecock Club members will gather with Cocky for fun and games and their own special menu.

Baseball

College of Charleston senior first baseman Michael Harrington has been named one of Louisville Slugger's National Players of the Week, it was announced by Collegiate Baseball magazine

Harrington, who also earned Southern Conference Player of the Week honors, hit .467 with five home runs, 11 RBI and scored eight runs for the week.

For the season, Harrington is hitting .318 with 23 homers and 74 RBIs. He set Charleston's career home run mark this weekend when he belted his 37th homer.

Charleston (34-17, 16-8 SoCon) is at Clemson today at 7:15 p.m.

Golf

Tim Tang of Charleston fired a 2-under 69 to tie for first at a U.S. Open local qualifier on Hilton Head Island. Playing on the par-71 Long Cove Club, Tang tied Scott Piercy of Las Vegas for first.

Also qualifying were University of South Carolina golfers Mark Anderson (72) of Beaufort and George Bryan IV (71) as well as Josh Gregory (71), Hank Smith (72), Kevin Kisner (72) and Bryant Odom (72). Alternates are Wesley Bryan (72) and Scott Usher (72).

The seven qualifiers advance to one of 14 sectionals. Sectional qualifiers advance to the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego on June 12-15.

Basketball

Former University of South Carolina standout Mike Boynton Jr. will join Darrin Horn's first staff as an assistant men's basketball coach. Boynton joins Scott Cherry and Cypheus Bunton as the full-time assistant coaches on the Gamecock staff.

Boynton spent the last year as an associate head coach at Wofford.

Prior to his stint at Coastal, he spent the 2004-05 season as graduate manager at Furman University.

In four seasons at South Carolina (2000-04), Boynton played in 125 career games, which ranks fourth all-time. He also finished in the top 10 in career 3-pointers made (129) and 3-pointers attempted (364).

Three Gamecocks named to Nagurski Watch List

Three South Carolina football players have been named to the 2008 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List, as announced by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA).

The award is given to the best defensive player in college football and is sponsored by the Charlotte Touchdown Club. Junior strong safety Emanuel Cook, junior defensive back Captain Munnerlyn and junior linebacker Eric Norwood were each named to the 88-member list for the Gamecocks.

Clemson redshirt senior safety Michael Hamlin was also named to the Watch List for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy.

Coastal's Anderson Big South Player of Week

Coastal Carolina junior David Anderson has been selected as the Big South Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Radford junior John Lloyd has been named Pitcher of the Week for games played May 5-11.

Andersonwas 8-for-15 with five home runs, nine RBIs and a 1.533 slugging percentage in a three-game sweep of High Point.
