South Carolina businesses poised for medical travelers, but few takers

The market for medical tourism is still small, but a few South Carolina businesses are ready to send patients abroad. Columbia-based Companion Global Healthcare formed a year ago and recently added three hospitals in Singapore to its international network, nearly doubling its overseas facilities. To date, however, the company has had only three patients, including President and Chief Operating Officer David Boucher. Charleston physician Dr. Lewis Gregory formed Destinations Medical Tours in March. Although yet to recruit its first patient, the company offers cosmetic procedures in Panama, where prices are about half of what U.S. services cost. Internationally, the number of medical travelers is estimated between 60,000 and 85,000, according to a May study by business consulting firm McKinsey & Co. Those numbers are much lower than previous estimates, which some marketers tout as high as 1 million. Read more in tomorrow's editions of The Post and Courier.
