West Ashley High School graduate Vera Swain is a semifinalist in the "Jeopardy!" 2008 College Championship. While the University of South Carolina junior missed her Final Jeopardy! question in her quarterfinal match Tuesday, she finished with enough cash to be selected to compete in the semifinals. She will appear Wednesday on WCBD-TV Channel 2. Swain, 21, was one of 15 contestants to appear in one of five episodes during the first week of the championship. The winners of those shows, along with the next four highest-money winners, were selected for the semifinals. Swain recently said she's been watching and playing along with "Jeopardy!" since she was in elementary school. "It's my favorite game show," she said. The championship shows were taped in April at the University of Wisconsin's Kohl Center. Contestants aren't allowed to comment on how they did until after a show airs. The grand-prize winner will get $100,000. The second-place contestant will get at least $50,000, and the third-place winner gets at least $25,000. Semifinalists earn $10,000, and players eliminated the first week get $5,000. Swain graduated 11th in her class at West Ashley High, and she landed a Palmetto Fellows college scholarship, the state's richest and most competitive award. |

Way to go Vera! It is great when a South Carolinian is given the opportunity to show the nation that we produce more than the next generation of fast food workers.
