Unpopular 5
Friday, May 9, 2008
In April, President Bush set a record for the highest presidential disapproval rating in the history of the Gallup Poll (69 percent). Last week, he broke his record, falling to 71 percent disapproval. In his honor, we note five unpopular things.
-- "Moose Murders": Recognized as the worst play in Broadway history, "Moose Murders" opened, and closed, Feb. 23, 1983. "Was it really that bad?" asked its author, Arthur Bicknell. "The simple answer is yes."
-- Microsoft Bob: This cloying 1995 visual interface project, led by Bill Gates' future wife, got named CNet.com's Worst Product of the Decade. Bob's legacy lives on in Clippit, the annoyingly helpful pop-up paperclip that raps on your monitor and interrupts you with the observation that "You seem to be writing a letter."
-- Jar Jar Binks: Fans of the Star Wars series disliked this character from "The Phantom Menace" so much that they re-edited the movie to take him out. Director George Lucas initially stood by his Gungan, but Binks made only cameo appearances in the final two episodes.
-- 2006 NBA basketball: The league's failed attempt to replace its traditional leather ball with a microfiber "frankenball" was so wildly unpopular with players that their union filed a grievance.
-- "The Adventures of Pluto Nash": On the bright side, this 2002 critical disaster managed to rack up $4.4 million at the U.S. box office. The problem? It cost more than $90 million to make. Author Peter Bart's two-word take? "Instant 'Ishtar.' "
