Time for Cougs to 'step it up'

From staff reports
Friday, May 9, 2008

It has been a feast or famine kind of year for the College of Charleston baseball team, sweeping three of their Southern Conference series this season and conversely getting swept twice.

With six SoCon games remaining and seven total before the SoCon Tournament scheduled for May 21-25 at Joe Riley Park, Cougars' coach John Pawlowski says it's time for his team to step it up.

"The biggest thing is just a lack of consistency," Pawlowski said. "These guys know that certainly they're talented enough. We didn't play well last weekend, but this team has some talent. If we get on a little roll here, there's no telling what this team can do."

Charleston (31-17, 13-8 SoCon) plays Wofford (21-29, 4-17) in a three-game series at Patriots Point Stadium, with game one set for 7 p.m. tonight, game two at 7 p.m. Saturday and game three for 1 p.m. Sunday.

The Cougars, who play at Clemson on Tuesday before concluding the regular season with a three-game SoCon series at Western Carolina next weekend, are in fourth place behind Furman, Elon, and UNC Greensboro.

"We have six conference games to go, so we've got a lot or work to do in a short period of time," Pawlowski said. "We seem to swing it really well at home and hopefully we can continue that. We really need to pitch well down the stretch."
