ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Catcher Jesus Montero led off the 13th inning with his fifth homer of the season to lift the Charleston RiverDogs over the Asheville Tourists, 7-6, in a South Atlantic League baseball game early Friday morning.

The dramatic shot followed a wild 12th inning in which both teams scored two runs to extend the matchup of the Southern Division's top two teams. Charleston (25-9) widened its lead in the divisioni to 1 1/2 games over Asheville (24-11).

Asheville's Brian Rike had supplied the heroics in the 12th with a one-out, two-run, game-tying homer that answered Charleston's initial extra-inning bid.

Austin Krum and Carmen Angelini each drew bases-loaded walks in the top of the 12th to establish a short-lived 6-4 advantage.

After the game started an hour late due to rain, Charleston built a 4-0 lead against Asheville starter Bruce Billings on two-run hits by Taylor Holiday in the third inning and Montero in the fourth.

Casey Erickson (1-0), who pitched the final three innings for Charleston notched his first win of the season.
