Hogan's second-half goal lifts Warriors over Green Wave in AAAA playoffs

Class AAAA Boys' Soccer

MOUNT PLEASANT — Shilo Tisdale doesn't forget losses, and in two years as head soccer coach at Wando he has a long memory of a very short list.

Thursday at Wando Stadium, Tisdale's Warriors exacted some payback.

Luke Hogan scored off a corner kick by Brandon Burkholder with 20 minutes to play and Wando (19-2) avenged an earlier loss to Summerville with a 1-0 victory over the Green Wave in the second round of the Class AAAA playoffs.

"We had several injuries that game, so we had the confidence, not just with the revenge factor, but that we had guys coming back and stepping in," said Tisdale, whose two-year record at Wando improved to 42-7 with the victory. "That's exactly what they did."

Wando will play at home Saturday against West Ashley, which beat Goose Creek 3-2.

Both keepers — Ronnie Murray for Summerville and Michael Flato for Wando — came up with big saves throughout the match.

Wando reached the second round with a 7-0 win over Conway.

Summerville (15-4) entered the game coming off a 5-2 victory in overtime at Dutch Fork in the first round of the playoffs and had defeated the Warriors 3-2 on March 18 at Summerville.

"Summerville and Wando is always going to be one of those games that's decided in one key moment," said Summerville coach Ed Carson. "They had theirs. We didn't have ours."

A scoreless first half saw limited scoring opportunities for each team.

Perhaps the best of the half for either team came with 32:20 to play when Summerville's Daniel Bowers headed the ball toward an empty goal but missed just to the right as Flato rushed out to defend.

"I'm extremely proud of our team," Carson said. "We've had a lot of succes this year. We had some chances. You have to give credit to Wando, but our guys deserve credit also. Best of luck to Wando."

Tisdale was excited about the win, but wants to see more the next time the Warriors take the field.

"It was an excellent game at times," he said. "Both keepers made great saves. Jitters showed on both sides. Once we got through the first 10 minutes, I knew we were going to be OK. But we're not done yet."
