S.C. Swimming honors coach Mount Pleasant Swim Club coach Elizabeth Campbell was recognized as the state coach of the year at the South Carolina Swimming banquet held on April 19 in Greenville. "This is a great honor for Liz and our department," Mount Pleasant Recreation Department program division chief Stacey Harrington said. "She is a great coach and we are fortunate she works with us." Also during the weekend, Mount Pleasant coach Doug Fetchen was elected general chair, the highest position on the organization's board. Fort Johnson wins golf league title Fort Johnson Middle School won the Charleston City Middle School Golf League Championship held at the Municipal Golf Course on May 1. Fort Johnson posted a team score of 25-over for a one-stroke victory over second place School of the Arts, which had come into the championship riding a streak of four straight regular season victories. Defending league champion C.E. Williams placed third at 33-over. Thomas Deogburn was the nine-hole medalist with a score of 4-over. First place in the six-hole division was shared by three golfers at 7-over: Parkwood Griffin of Christ Our King, Davis Mixon of Fort Johnson and Conner Kilgallen of School of the Arts. The next event for the league is the skills challenge, and the season will culminate with the awards and recognition dinner on May 22. East Cooper Coastal Triathlon results James Vavra of Daniel Island was the overall winner of the fourth annual East Cooper Coastal Triathlon held April 20 on a course that started on Isle of Palms, traveled through Sullivan's Island and finished in Mount Pleasant. The race included a 0.6-mile swim, 16-mile bike ride and four-mile run and featured 165 participants and 11 teams. Vavra took the lead during the bike segment of the race and finished in an overall time of 1:18:56. Adam Martin was second with a time of 1:24:46. Tracy Dewitt was the top female participant with a time of 1:31:57, beating Victoria Whalen who finished in 1:38:08.
