Diamondbacks honor Laverys

The Goose Creek Diamondback travel baseball teams dedicated their weekend of play to the loss of Terri and Dennis Lavery, members of the organization who were killed in a traffic accident on April 26.

The 14-and-under team finished second at the fourth annual Mayfest Mayhem on Saturday and Sunday. They wore No. 35 — the uniform number of teammate Zach Lavery — on black wristbands and on their batting helmets. They also embroidered the Laverys' names on their caps.

The 10U, 11U and 12U teams played at the Lowcountry Home Run Challenge at the Jerry Blackwell Sports Complex in Summerville. All of the players wore black wristbands and the parents wore black bracelets with the words "hope, courage, faith" on them.

Both tournament sites put out donation boxes in remembrance to the Laverys, and the 18U team held a fundraiser dinner. Donations for the Lavery family can be sent to the Goose Creek Diamondbacks at P.O. Box 551, Goose Creek, SC 29445-0551.
