Taco Boy perfect hotspot for Folly Beach

Thursday, May 8, 2008

Taco Boy

Address: 15 Center St.

Phone: 588-9751

Credit Cards: All major credit cards accepted.

Parking: Can be tricky on Folly Beach.

Bathrooms: Gender-specific and adequate.

Service: Good.

Prices: $3 domestic. $4 import. $5-$10 margaritas.

History: The bartender says the business that used to be in the same location as Taco Boy is referred to by their employees as The Shag Club. Whether that was the actual name of the place remains in question.

Folly Beach is a favorite scene for those who enjoy the beach atmosphere as much as the actual sun, sand and saltwater. On Center Street in the spring and summer, you'll find an eclectic mix of surfers and seniors, locals and tourists, and everyone in between who enjoy the bars and restaurants along Folly Beach's main thoroughfare.

Though relatively new, Taco Boy has fast become a primary hotspot.

Taco Boy, as the name implies, is indeed a Mexican restaurant, but for many beach-goers the food is just the beginning. It dawned on me just how much of a bar atmosphere Taco Boy was when a group of friends insisted on stopping by and enthusiastically bellied up to the bar for the "Mango Margarita."

"Taco Boy's Mango Margarita is to die for!" exclaimed a lady friend and her girlfriends soon agreed.

Taco Boy offers a number of margaritas, the house specialty, and all are reasonably priced. Another unique feature is that you can order your favorite Mexican beer "michelada" style, which includes lime juice and hot sauce over ice and a salted rim and it's only a buck extra.

Taco Boy features outdoor and indoor seating, and the front patio is a great spot for people watching on Folly.

Inside, Taco Boy has high-standing tables (typical of a bar) and lower tables (typical of a restaurant) that suit the atmosphere perfectly.

My favorite part of their decor is the "beehive" (for lack of a better term) style lamps that adorn the bar area.

Taco Boy is perfect for Folly Beach and the perfect spot for beachgoers looking for food — and then some.
