Memminger plans three open houses Families of preschool and elementary-age children are invited to learn more about Memminger Elementary School at one of three open-house sessions May 22-23. Visitors may tour the school, meet the faculty, enjoy refreshments and share preferences for a school focus and partial magnet status starting in fall 2009. Memminger is at 20 Beaufain St., downtown Charleston. Open houses are scheduled 1-3 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. May 22, and 10 a.m.-noon May 23. Ensemble Band set at University School The U.S. Air Force Heritage Aire Celtic Ensemble Band will perform 10 a.m. May 12 at University School of the Lowcountry. The Ensemble Band is composed of active-duty Air Force personnel from Langley AFB, and they recently returned from a deployment in the Middle East. The group blends traditional music of Ireland, Scotland and England with a contemporary musical style to create a musical tapestry. Members perform on traditional instruments, such as Irish flute, tin whistles and bodhran, as well as modern instruments such as acoustic guitar and button accordion. The show will be held in the gym and is free and open to the public. The nonsectarian independent school for high-achieving students is at 690 Coleman Blvd. in Mount Pleasant. School collecting scholarship funds Orange Grove Charter Elementary School is collecting money for the Doug DiCenzo Memorial Scholarship Fund. The fund honors the life of Larry DiCenzo's son, Doug, who was a soldier serving in Iraq. The funds will go to sponsor fathers and sons attending wrestling camp together at The Citadel this summer.
