Behind Bars

Thursday, May 8, 2008

Spring in Charleston is known for the yellow pollen everywhere, great art walks and a chance to enjoy a nice stroll to search for the perfect cocktail.

While enjoyable, often times one's drinking routine tends to need some spring cleaning. It is so easy to get stuck in that cocktail rut.

Do you find yourself going to the same bars in the same order every weekend?

What do you recommend to freshen up the cocktail experience? We would like your suggestions.

How do you make a somewhat stagnant bar experience come alive for spring?

Drop us a line at lroberts@postandcourier.com.

Favorite cocktails

The cocktail favorites list continues. Susan wrote in to tell Preview her favorite new cocktail is served at the Thoroughbred Club inside Charleston Place at 205 Meeting St., downtown. It's called Mouzon's Mash.

Its made with Jack Daniel's, fresh peaches, sugar, mint and soda water.

If you have a favorite cocktail that you would like to share with our readers, drop us a line at lroberts@postandcourier.com.

Market Street Saloon

The dancing girls on top of the bar are back in full force at the Market Street Saloon, 32-D N. Market St.

The bar held its re-grand opening last week. It being run under new management and ownership. So, if you did not get enough of the "Coyote Ugly" concept the first time, stop back by and check it out.

Wedding signature drinks

I have run into a cool trend this wedding season.

It seems more and more people getting married offer their guests a signature cocktail at the reception.

This is a cocktail that defines who they are and one that presents a statement of the evening to come.

I was at a wedding Saturday night, and the hosts offered a pink mojito rimmed with pink rock sugar. The reception was at the beach, and it was the perfect fit for the late-afternoon cocktail hour.

Let us know what cocktails you have seen offered at weddings, and we'll share your ideas.

Drinks down under

Salty Mike's located at the Charleston City Marina has been a local watering hole for years and a great place to pull the boat (or the car) up to and grab an ice cold one.

The place offers happy hour seven days a week 4-7 p.m. with $2 domestics, $3 imports and $4 house cocktails.

If you're looking the place up on a GPS, it is located at N 32-46-720 and W 79-57-021. For details on Salty Mike's weekly events, call 723-6325.

Henry's

Back in the 1950s, Henry's on the market was not only a white-table-cloth, must-dine restaurant, but it also housed many well known locals upstairs on the second floor for a weekly card game.

I know this, as my grandfather was a weekly player. Times certainly have changed, but the flavor of Henry's remains the same.

A few years back, Henry's in Mount Pleasant opened its doors at 816 Johnnie Dodds Blvd. and has had some success.

The Mount Pleasant location is now hoping to lure all food and beverage workers to stop by after on Tuesday night shifts. For all the details, call 971-1777.
