Downey still facing one charge

USC star faces June court date for assault

The Post and Courier

COLUMBIA — South Carolina point guard Devan Downey spent several hours Monday in a Richland County jail, despite the fact that, according to university sources, Downey and the victim apparently shook hands after the April 25 on-campus incident.

South Carolina's Devan Downey still faces a simple assault charge following his recent arrest.

South Carolina's Devan Downey still faces a simple assault charge following his recent arrest.

Downey was released Monday evening on a personal recognizance bond, but he still faces a simple assault charge. He'll likely have a June court date, unless the charges are dropped.

The incident report, released Tuesday by USC, says Downey, 23, and 19-year-old student Curtis Lowery of Irmo were involved in a noontime verbal altercation at the Russell House's Grand Market food court.

The report says Downey then walked up to Lowery and allegedly "mushed" him by pushing the palm of his hand into his face. Downey then left the scene, it says.

Officers were summoned, but the report says, "Lowery stated that he does not wish to pursue any legal action."

After consideration, Lowery changed his mind.

Sources say Lowery became irritated that Downey was bragging about the incident to those he knew.

Per university policy, Downey has been suspended from the team because of the arrest. After the legal process plays out, he will have an opportunity for reinstatement.

USC officials said Tuesday that they do not expect coach Darrin Horn to address the issue.

Downey led the Gamecocks in points (18.4 a game) and assists (5.4) last season. The transfer from Cincinnati, a Chester native, also set an SEC single-season record with 103 steals.

Thugs. sc is full of lawless THUGS! How many arrested this year alone? Football, mens basketball, womens basketball and on and on and on. Thugs. The ncaa needs to step in and investigate why sc is so out of control, maybe place the whole athletic department on 3 years probation, or just shut them down. . I know I have talked to many parents who say they would never send a child to sc! Out of control! Sc still has never had an african american head coach in any major sport. The rebel flag still for all to see only miles from the sc campus. Unreal.

The flag has nothing to do with this. Bitter, bitter, bitter.

This was nothing! Downey committed harder fouls on the court than what happened to the "victim", who originally declined to press charges.

bigriver1,
what does the confederate flag have to do with this article! Happy Confederate Memorial Day, Friday May 9, 2008.

Would a black coach control the black players better? How?
