As the weak dollar hits imports, the Port of Charleston says exports are booming

Thanks in large part to the weak dollar, February was the second-best month in the history of the State Ports Authority for exports of loaded containers. Further, exports of break-bulk cargo — non-containerized goods that are difficult or impossible to transport in standard-size containers, such as automobiles — are up by a whopping 77 percent. The flow of goods through Charleston's docks, many of them products of Palmetto State manufacturers or suppliers, has helped reduce the impact of a general downturn in cargo shipments nationwide. "We're seeing things exported that we've never seen before," said Jack Daniel, president of International Forwarders Inc. in Charleston, which arranges international transportation and other services for importers and exporters.
