'Wahines' take center stage at Folly Beach

2002 WAHINE CLASSIC: Kelly Kane and Katie Coryell, co-founders of the surf classic, try to catch a wave.

Expect big crowds at this year’s Wahine Classic, a surfing contest for girls and women, to be held May 31-June 1 at the Washout on Folly Beach.

Contest organizers expect about 100 surfers this year, and plan to provide goody bags for all contestants and prize bags for the top six finishers in all divisions.

The contest, named after the Hawaiian word for woman, features shortboard, longboard and age-group divisions. This year’s contest also includes body boarding and novice competitions, as well as a “one design” division, in which every surfer competes on the same board, supplied by event organizers.

Also look for the popular “Push ’n Surf” division, where parents or friends push tiny wahines onto waves. All “Push ’n Surf” participants receive a first place award.

Entries are open, and the fees are $35 for the first event and $10 for each additional event.

The 2008 Wahine Classic includes a party on May 31, and event organizers will provide food and drinks for competitors on the beach. Spectators and surfers also can try their luck in a raffle featuring a surf board and other prizes, donated by local surf shops and national sponsors.

This year’s event is sponsored by the city of Folly Beach, the Southern South Carolina District of the Eastern Surfing Association and the Charleston Chapter of Surfrider Foundation. Contest organizers plan to donate the proceeds to Dragon Boat Charleston, a team of paddlers who are also cancer survivors.
