Hollywood council annexes 12 Petersfield properties

The wish of 12 property owners was granted this week when the town of Hollywood welcomed them with open arms.

Town Council voted unanimously to annex the properties in the area known as Petersfield, which is bordered by Hollywood on one side and Meggett on the other. It was the first annexation request in at least a year.

One of the property owners, Kevin Scott, stood and clapped after council made its decision.

Scott said he wanted to join the town so that he would have a voice. Many problems, including flooding of yards and streets, have not been fixed by Charleston County.

Beverly Rice said she and other property owners needed to be a part of something. She's looking forward to her area being included when Hollywood receives grants for various projects, helps seniors and fixes up houses.

"Hollywood has a lot of offer," Rice said.

The amount of taxes they pay will not change, nor will their services, such as fire.

Mayor Jacquelyn Heyward said the benefits of coming into the town include not having to travel as far to apply for permits, being represented by a local municipality, and being "a part of a great community who has the interests of the citizens at heart."

Residents also can rent the town's facilities at cheaper rates, and will benefit from services the town hopes to offer, such as its own police department and garbage collection, said Planning and Zoning Administrator Ed Holton.

Annexing properties in the area's "doughnut holes," those not currently inside town limits, fit into Hollywood's comprehensive plan, Holton said.

Heyward said the property owners approached the town about annexation. A presentation was made at a nearby church to discuss the advantages and invite people to join the town.

Hollywood has about 4,000 residents.
