Vietnam veteran sculpture on display at Patriots Point

The Post and Courier
Friday, March 28, 2008

Former North Charleston mayor Bobby Kinard’s long-time effort to move a Vietnam veteran’s memorial sculpture from City Hall to Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant has finally been realized.

The 550-pound sculpture with a 8,100-pound base is now prominently displayed in the center “roundabout” of the park and ringed by 13 ankle-high shrubs. The site is where the road divides into three paths: toward the golf course, the waterfront museum and the harborfront hotel.

The 10-foot-tall bronze is titled “The Three Faces of War” and was created by Timothy Werrell of Durham, N.C. It depicts one figure longing for peace and home, another symbolizing the gallant, honorable soldier, and a third figure representing death.

Kinard was chairman of an effort to create a Lowcountry monument to Vietnam veterans and spearheaded the effort to raise $60,000 for the sculpture. It was dedicated in 1986.

The new spot, named in honor of former South Carolina congressman Mendel Davis, will draw the attention of people visiting the site daily, he said. A dedication ceremony will take place in coming months, Kinard said.
