Cougars notch softball series sweep

State Report

MOUNT PLEASANT — The College of Charleston (16-21, 3-0) scored six runs in the fourth inning and held on for a 7-5 victory over Appalachian State (4-21, 3-3) on Saturday to cap a sweep of their three-game Southern Conference softball series.

The Cougars led 1-0 before their big sixth, highlighted by Kristi Woodall's two-out, three-run double that made it 5-0.

Appalachian had two runs in the fifth and sixth to draw to within 7-5.

Terri Mesko struck out five in five innings for the win. Shannon Howard earned a save.

--Charleston Southern (14-22) split a doubleheader on the road against Presbyterian, falling 8-6 before winning the second game 9-7.

In the nightcap, CSU scored four runs in the sixth inning to turn a 6-5 deficit into a 9-6 lead. Sondra Vetter earned the victory in relief.

PC scored eight in the first three innings of Game 1, knocking out Bucs starter Jamie Wellons with five runs in the third.

College track

Charleston Southern's women's 4x100-meter relay set a school record in placing fourth at the 49ers Classic in Charlotte.

Ebony Muller, Canchettar Delamar, Misha Morris and Jessica Thomas posted a time of 46.50 seconds.

--Tasha Sanders posted The Citadel's second-best women's discus throw with a 138-foot, 4-inch effort that was good for third place in the Shamrock Invitational in Conway.

--The College of Charleston's Summer Chambless finished seventh in the pole vault with a 3.2-meter height for the College of Charleston women at the Shamrock Invitational.
