The city of Charleston will receive an Archaeological Stewardship Award and a Preservation Honor Award from The Palmetto Trust for Historic Preservation for the restoration City Hall, a $10 million project completed in 2007. In announcing the award, the nonprofit trust noted the archaeological work performed during the City Hall restoration, where a team took time and resources to investigate artifacts of a colonial meat market that existed on the site in the mid-1700s. "It's rare that an elaborate project will be halted to focus on another project as it arises, but in this case, the proper time and care was devoted to ensuring the preservation of each piece of history in this old structure," said Mike Bedenbaugh, executive director of the Palmetto Trust for Historic Preservation. The organization will also recognize Charleston-based engineering firm 4SE, Inc. with an Honor Award celebrating the company's historic preservation project in stabilizing the Cathedral of Saint Luke and Saint Paul in downtown Charleston. Also, The Noisette Co. of North Charleston will be presented with a Preservation Honor Award for the historic rehabilitation of 10 Storehouse Row, once known as Building NSC 45, in The Charleston Navy Yard Historic District. "At the Navy Yard, The Noisette Company has recreated an old industrial space into a really nice place to live, work and play," said Bedenbaugh. The awards will be presented Wednesday in Greenville.
