Clemson assistants get a raise

The Post and Courier
Thursday, March 20, 2008

CLEMSON — It's not the kind of money Tennessee was throwing at him, but Clemson offensive coordinator Rob Spence is still pocketing a big pay raise.

According to numbers supplied by senior associate athletic director Katie Hill on Wednesday, Spence has received a $43,000 raise and now makes $250,000 a year — a 20.7 percent increase from his previous salary of $207,000.

Spence interviewed at Tennessee in December and later announced he was remaining at Clemson. Volunteers coach Phillip Fulmer approached him again in early January, offering a salary approaching $400,000 a year.

Spence, preparing for his fourth season with the Tigers, remains behind defensive coordinator Vic Koenning in terms of pay. Koenning received a $30,000 bump and is now making $260,000 per year.

Clemson handed out a total of $140,000 in raises to the nine football assistants, an 84 percent increase from last year's raises. Hill said more detailed information, such as which coaches have multi-year deals, will be available next week.

Billy Napier, who coaches tight ends while also serving as recruiting coordinator, received a $25,000 raise and now makes $110,000 a year. Defensive line coach Chris Rumph saw his pay bumped from $101,000 to $120,000.

Linebackers coach David Blackwell is the only coach whose salary ($142,000) remains the same. The Tigers now have four assistants making $200,000 or more: Koenning, Spence, offensive line coach Brad Scott ($200,000) and receivers coach Dabo Swinney ($200,000).

I would do Spence's job for free. It can't be hard. He has two of the best backs in college football. All he has to do is keep it between the tackles and run out the clock. Quit that bubble pass garbage and start playing football. When the defense starts to put 8-9 people in the box then run play action pass with the best QB in the ACC. If he can't figure it out at least with his new pay raise he can purchase Offense for Dummies book at the Clemson Book Store. The only reason he didn't go to Tennesse is because Philip Fulmer after watching Spence's poor play calling would take over that responsibility after game number 2 and Spence would be gone at the end of the season, which is what Tommy should have done last year.
