10 S.C. courses make top 100 list

South Carolina was well represented in Golfweek's 2008 Best Courses that were announced this week. The publication breaks the top 100 rankings into Modern (1960 to the present) and Classic (before 1960). Cypress Point in Pebble Beach remained at the top of the Classic list. It opened in 1928 and was designed by Alister Mackenzie. Yeamans Hall Club moved up two spots to No. 40. The Dunes Club in Myrtle Beach slipped one spot to No. 94. Joining Cypress Point in the top 10 Classic courses were: Pine Valley, Shinnecock Hills, Pebble Beach, Merion-East, Oakmont, National Golf Links, Crystal Downs, Prairie Dunes and Augusta National. The No. 1 Modern course was Sand Hills in Mullen, Neb., built in 1995 by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. Palmetto courses on the Modern list included: No. 20, The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, down four spots from 2007; No. 33 Harbour Town on Hilton Head Island, down four places; No. 46 Long Cove Club on Hilton Head Island, down seven; No. 75 Cassique at Kiawah Island Club, down four spots; No. 86 Old Tabby at Spring Island, up three places; No. 91 Secession Golf Club in Beaufort, up four spots; No. 95 Musgrove Mill in Clinton, down 16 spots; and No. 100 Caledonia Golf & Fish Club in Pawleys Island, down two spots. In addition to Sand Hills, the rest of the top 10 Modern courses were: Pacific Dunes, Whistling Straits, Friar's Head, Pete Dye Golf Club, Bandon Dunes, Kinloch Golf Club, The Golf Club, Shadow Creek and Muirfield Village. South Carolina had 10 make the publication's top courses you can play — Ocean Course, Harbour Town, Caledonia, Dunes, May River (Bluffton), Tidewater (North Myrtle Beach), True Blue (Pawleys Island), TPC at Myrtle Beach, Wild Dunes-Links (Isle of Palms) and Barefoot Landing-Love (North Myrtle Beach). Platinum honor for Kiawah Kiawah Island Golf Resort has been named a Platinum Resort by Golf Magazine, one of 10 resorts to receive the top honor. Kiawah also was No. 1 on the Green Golf Awards, places "where the environment and your enjoyment can co-exist." No South Carolina resorts were named on the Gold level, while Sea Pines on Hilton Head Island made the Silver list. Benefit raises $25,000 The third annual Calling All Angels benefit golf tournament held at Kiawah Island Golf Resort's Osprey Point raised more than $25,000 to benefit Angel Oak, Mt. Zion and Frierson elementary schools, located on Johns and Wadmalaw Islands. Pine Forest wins Interclub Host Pine Forest finished first in the Charleston Men's Interclub tournament with a score of -21, four points ahead of Stono Ferry. Wescott finished third with -34. Phil McKee of Patriots Point won a tiebreaker over Bill Zellmann of Coosaw Creek, Jack Giddens of Shadowmoss and Brian O'Melia of Wescott Plantation for the top individual with 4 points. Stono Ferry leads the yearly standings with 35 points, followed by: Pine Forest, 28.5; Coosaw Creek, 26.5; Wescott, 26.5; Berkeley, 22.5; Shadowmoss, 22; Municipal, 21; RiverTowne, 19; Dunes West, 18; Miler, 16.5; Legend Oaks, 16.5; Patriots Point, 14; and Crowfield, 12.5. Dambaugh wins Katelyn Dambaugh of Northwood Academy won the 2008 College Prep Tour event played at Pinehurst Country Club, finishing 13 shots ahead of Katie Kirk of Davidson, N.C. Spencer second Kyle Spencer of Mount Pleasant finished second in the boys' 8-9 age group of the S.C. Junior Golf Association's Pee Wee Championship played at Greenwood Country Club. Spencer shot 85 and finished six strokes behind winner Trevor Phillips of Inman. A free National Golf Day clinic and demo day is set Saturday at the Links of Summerville, on Hwy. 17-A.
