Sodawater Grill
Rob Young
The Sodawater Grill sits on the main drag of Daniel Island; it's a clever restaurant/bar serving appetizers, burgers, sandwiches and salads. The decor is definitely appreciable. Classic albums from the likes of Davey Jones, Frank Sinatra, Lionel Richie, Air Supply, Sammy Hagar and John Cougar line the ceiling. Can't say they define Sodawater's tastes, though. The restaurant played The Flaming Lips' "Vaseline" and some Al Greene during our visit. Sodawater has typical bar grub: quesadillas, nachos, chicken tenders, fried shrimp, wings and mozzarella sticks. Plus, the restaurant features a number of specials, including hamburger steak ($10) with gravy and mashed potatoes and a turkey brie wrap, jazzed up with an orange zest cherry mayonnaise creation. It's too sweet for us, but we flipped for one of Sodawater's signature sandwiches, the grilled roast beef ($9), sufficiently charred, a tad salty, with melted provolone cheese and artichokes on a soft kaiser roll. Other sandwich options: Buffalo chicken wrap ($9), fried chicken cordon bleu ($9), tarragon cashew chicken salad ($9) and the Churchill ($9), with roast beef, coleslaw, Swiss cheese, horseradish and tomatoes on marble bread. The burgers ($9) are stuffed with pimento cheese or bleu cheese, and the salads range from Baja ($8), with seasoned black beans, jalapenos and mozzarella, to the grilled shrimp and goat cheese ($12), layered with cashews and roasted red peppers and topped with crunchy noodles. Overall, the menu bears promise, meriting additional exploration.
